About the Role
We’re looking for a Controller to lead financial reporting and accounting operations for VFG Advisory LLC. This is a high-impact, technically demanding role at the center of a growing, multi-entity professional services firm backed by private capital. You’ll perform the monthly close, consolidate financial statements, and calculate compliance with covenants. On the operations side, you'll manage the accounting operations team, take over the firm's billing function, a process with real complexity given the firm's diverse client base, and lead the accounting operations integration of acquired firms as VFG continues to grow through acquisitions.
VFG is in the process of transitioning from QuickBooks to an enterprise-level, multi-entity accounting platform, and this role will be instrumental in that effort. You’ll work alongside the VFG team and consultants to help implement multi-entity accounting workflows and support the rollout of new policies for invoicing, collections, AR, AP, and other core areas in the new system, and train existing staff on how to execute in the new environment. This is not a maintain-the-status-quo Controller role, it’s an opportunity to help build the financial infrastructure of a firm that is actively growing.
You’ll work closely with the VFG team, comprised of hands-on CPAs who will provide context, guidance, and input as you ramp up. You’ll be joining a firm in the middle of significant operational change - building new systems, defining new processes, and learning a new multi-entity structure. The right candidate sees that as the opportunity, not the obstacle. We move quickly, take on complex problems, and expect everyone on the team to take ownership of their work and push themselves to grow. For the right person, a CPA who is skilled in Excel, experienced with multi-entity accounting, and ready to take ownership of a critical function this is a role with real visibility and the chance to shape how the firm operates financially.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Debt Compliance
- Own the monthly close process for VFG Advisory and its related entities, including recording adjusting journal entries, consolidating the financial statements, and accounting for acquisitions.
- Produce a monthly financial reporting package for key stakeholders with the three financial statements presented on a consolidated basis, alongside budget vs. actual reporting.
- Track compliance with financial covenants, including preparing quarterly compliance packages, supporting calculations, and schedules for lender reporting.
- Manage treasury and cash management functions: monitor liquidity, coordinate with lenders, prepare borrowing base certificates, and maintain the firm’s 13-week cash flow model.
- Work with the VFG team to draft journal entries supported by Excel analyses and accounting research, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with GAAP.
- Lead the annual audit process: prepare statutory financial statements in accordance with the firm’s foundational agreements, serve as the primary point of contact for auditors, and coordinate all audit requests.
- Prepare the annual financial plan, complete with an annual budget and related forecasts, projections, and special calculations.
- Deliver financial analyses and KPIs to support managerial decision-making, leveraging Excel and PowerBI to build dashboards and reports.
Accounting Operations & Billing
- Lead the monthly billing process: review time entries, draft non-standard invoices requiring judgment and knowledge of the firm’s billing methods, oversee the AR Specialist responsible for standard invoicing and collections, and route invoices to leadership for approval.
- Provide oversight and hands-on support for core accounting functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and multi-ledger accounting across entities.
- Lead the accounting operations integration of acquired firms, including onboarding billing and AP of acquired entities onto the firm’s accounting platform, tracking acquired receivables, and training acquired staff on our accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the firm’s books and records, including maintaining workpapers and supporting documentation in connection with the month-end close.
- Prepare the firm’s tax returns for review by the tax partner.
Systems Transition & Process Leadership
- Work alongside the VFG team and consultants during the firm’s transition from QuickBooks to an enterprise-level, multi-entity accounting platform, contributing to system design decisions and workflow configuration as part of a collaborative team effort.
- Train and support existing staff—many of whom have worked exclusively in QuickBooks—on new procedures and responsibilities in the new system.
- Help document and implement the accounting policies and procedures that will govern how the firm operates in the new system, including workflows for AR, AP, and multi-entity accounting.
- Identify opportunities to streamline and improve financial reporting and accounting processes as the firm’s systems and data capabilities evolve.
Qualifications
Required
- 5–10 years of accounting experience, including financial reporting, consolidations, and multi-entity accounting in a professional services or PE-backed environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with an active CPA license
- Strong technical accounting knowledge, including GAAP research, purchase accounting, and consolidation principles.
- Experience training teams on new workflows, systems, or procedures, with the ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with staff across different levels of technical proficiency.
- Advanced Excel skills with the ability to perform complex analyses and structure financial data – this role requires hands-on technical proficiency, not just oversight. A technical exercise will be part of the application process.
- Hands-on experience with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or a similar enterprise-level accounting platform, with demonstrated proficiency in multi-ledger, multi-entity configuration, consolidation, and reporting.
- Strong written communication skills, including experience preparing financial deliverables, presentations, and memos for key stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Preferred
- Prior experience in a PE-backed or acquisition-heavy environment, with familiarity with purchase accounting and integration workflows.
- Experience participating in an ERP implementation or accounting system migration.
- Familiarity with Power BI or similar data visualization and reporting tools.
