We are seeking a passionate and mission-driven Controller to help expand the impact of Shepherd’s House Ministries across all sites and advance this life-changing work.

The Controller is accountable for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial operations at Shepherd’s House Ministries while collaborating with the CFO, the Director of Development, and the COO on strategic planning and budgeting efforts. This role upholds organizational transparency, accountability, and alignment with mission-driven goals.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Model Christ-centered leadership by embodying honesty, compassion, humility, teachability, and hospitality of spirit in all interactions and decisions.
  • Provide strategic financial leadership, assisting in short- and long-range financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and benchmark development to support organizational sustainability.
  • Monitor and analyze monthly financial performance against budget, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities, and providing actionable recommendations to leadership.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial operations, including general ledger oversight, reconciliations (bank, credit card, balance sheet, grants), accounts payable review, and revenue tracking.
  • Oversee and develop the accounting team, establishing clear structures, holding regular 1:1 meetings, setting performance expectations, and ensuring accountability and professional growth.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and documented accounting policies, continuously improving procedures to strengthen financial integrity and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements, tax filings, grant invoicing (submitted by the 12th monthly), and ECFA certification standards.
  • Lead audit and grant readiness efforts, preparing all required documentation for annual audits and external reporting in a timely, organized manner.
  • Foster cross-department collaboration, regularly partnering with site Directors and leadership to promote financial understanding, transparency, and shared ownership of fiscal health.
  • Uphold organizational standards and professionalism, including timely invoice processing (3–5 days), accurate time reporting, attendance at required meetings/trainings, and proactive communication with the CFO and executive team.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Proficient in all aspects of Intacct accounting software and Ramp payment system (minimum 3 years of experience).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • 1-3 management years management experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with government grant reporting (preferred, not required)
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting practices (preferred, not required).
  • Experience with a paperless file management system

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily in an office environment.
  • Considers 3-5 hours direct service hours elsewhere in the ministry.
  • Periodic weekend or evening work may be required.
  • Working from a remote location is permissible, if approved by supervisor.
  • Collaborative team environment requiring regular interaction with multiple leaders to develop and facilitate budget goals.
  • Awareness and empathy for front-line staff who work with the houseless community and face multiple daily crises. This position requires strong team-building skills to foster a supportive environment while adhering to structured timelines necessary for financial operations.
