Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Ohio, an Affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, empowers the young people who need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens by providing high-quality and impactful out-of-school time programming for youth in grades K-12. BGCCO serves about 3,200 youth per year throughout Central Ohio.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Ohio is seeking a Controller. This role is a hybrid position; the on-site work location will be located at 1000 Cleveland Ave, Columbus, Ohio 43201. (Milo-Grogan Clubhouse)

Position Overview

The Controller is responsible for managing all accounting operations; for planning, directing, and executing the organization’s accounting and financial operations in a non-profit environment. The role ensures compliance with GAAP and IRS regulations, enforces internal controls, tracks development grants and governmental grants, oversees budget preparation, and produces accurate, timely financial statements.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversees Accounting Department operations.
  • Leads training and identifies advancement needs within the accounting team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day accounting including A/P, GL, payroll processing, development pledges, pledge payments, donations and revenue recognition.
  • Maintain and improve documented accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to minimize risk.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Apply not-for-profit accounting principles, including proper handling of restricted funds and purchasing procedures.
  • Review bills and invoices for accurate coding and compliance with internal policies. Process payments promptly.
  • Track donation/grant expenditures, ensuring funder compliance, and provide financial support for grant applications and donor final reports.
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulations: IRS, Federal grant and Philanthropy grants, local, state and Federal reporting and tax filings.
  • Prepare for the annual audit and liaise with the external auditors.
  • Prepare for the annual 990 Tax Return and liaise with the external Tax CPAs preparers.
  • Monitor and manage cash balances.
  • Coordinate and direct preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts; monitor performance and report variances to management. Recommend and track financial benchmarks to measure organizational performance.
  • Provide financial analysis to support decision-making related to programs, grants, capital investments, pricing, and contracts.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • 5+ years of nonprofit progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, including GAAP and not-for-profit accounting.
  • Experience with Federal grant financial reporting, inclusive of SEFA preparation preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of QuickBooks.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
