Automotive Accounting Controller

Location: Hawkins Chevrolet SUPERSTORE
Reports To: Executive General Manager

Position Summary

The Automotive Accounting Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of the dealership. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with manufacturer and regulatory requirements, and the integrity of accounting processes across all departments including sales, service, parts, and body shop.

This position plays a critical leadership role in driving profitability, maintaining internal controls, and supporting strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements in accordance with dealership and manufacturer guidelines
• Ensure timely and accurate completion of month-end and year-end close
• Maintain and reconcile the general ledger and all balance sheet schedules
• Monitor cash flow, floorplan, and working capital

Dealership Accounting Oversight

• Oversee accounting for:
• Vehicle inventory (new & used)
• Deals posting and funding
• Service & parts operations
• Payroll and commissions
• Accounts payable & receivable
• Ensure proper recording of all transactions in the DMS (Dealertrack DMS)

Compliance & Controls

• Ensure compliance with OEM requirements, lender agreements, and government regulations
• Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard dealership assets
• Manage audits (internal, external, manufacturer, and floorplan)
• Ensure compliance with tax filings, sales tax, and title regulations

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead and develop the accounting office team (AP, AR, title clerks, payroll, etc.)
• Establish processes, accountability, and performance standards
• Train staff on dealership accounting best practices

Operational Support

• Partner with department managers to review financial performance
• Provide insight into gross profit, expense control, and departmental KPIs
• Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning

Qualifications

• 3–7+ years of automotive dealership accounting experience (DESIRED)
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
• Prior experience as Controller or Assistant Controller preferred
• Strong knowledge of dealership financial statements and schedules
• Experience with DMS systems (Dealertrack, CDK, or similar)
• Advanced understanding of Excel and accounting software
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Pay: $80,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
