Controller

Overview

Yale Ventures is seeking a Controller to help strengthen reporting, controls, cash management, and financial accountability across a growing real estate platform with approximately 1,000 units. This role will work closely with ownership and help build the finance infrastructure needed to support continued growth.

About Yale Ventures

Yale Ventures is a growing, vertically integrated real estate investment and operating platform with approximately 1,000 residential units and over $100 million of assets under management and ownership. Our business spans the full lifecycle of the asset, including acquisitions, ownership, asset management, property management, maintenance, and construction. We are in an active growth phase and expect to double the portfolio over the next two years. As we grow, we are focused on building the policies, processes, and financial infrastructure needed to scale thoughtfully.

About the Role

We are seeking a Controller to help strengthen and scale the internal finance and accounting function of the business. This role will work closely with ownership and play a key part in improving reporting, controls, cash management, and financial accountability across the organization.

We already utilize a third-party accounting firm for core transactional work, including bookkeeping, invoicing, and bank reconciliations. This role is focused on owning the internal oversight layer above that work, making sure financial processes are tight, issues are followed through, and ownership has clear visibility into performance.

This is a strong opportunity for someone who wants meaningful responsibility inside a growing real estate platform. We are open to candidates coming from a range of backgrounds and levels, provided they are capable, hands-on, and comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment where systems and processes are still being built.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly close and financial review process
  • Review financial statements and supporting schedules for accuracy, completeness, and follow-up items
  • Improve internal reporting for ownership and decision-making
  • Track and drive resolution of accounting, reporting, and expense-related issues
  • Help build tighter controls, approvals, and accounting processes
  • Coordinate with the third-party accounting firm and hold them accountable to timelines and quality
  • Work across accounting, operations, property management, maintenance, and construction to improve handoffs and issue resolution
  • Review and manage weekly payment batches, including cash availability and adherence to approval processes
  • Oversee short-term cash positioning and account transfers to ensure funds are available for operating needs, debt service, vendor payments, and distributions
  • Review proposed ownership distributions and confirm supportable cash availability before release
  • Help manage day-to-day treasury coordination across bank accounts, property operations, and third-party accounting
  • Support budgeting, cash tracking, and financial planning processes
  • Assist with lender, investor, audit, tax, and compliance-related reporting as needed
  • Help build a finance function that can scale with the business

Qualifications

  • 4 to 10+ years of accounting or finance experience
  • Real estate accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in property accounting, fund accounting, public accounting with real estate clients, or a real estate operating platform
  • Strong understanding of monthly close, reconciliations, financial statements, internal controls, and cash management
  • Ability to identify issues, organize next steps, and drive follow-through
  • Comfortable working in a growing business where processes are still being built
  • Strong attention to detail and sound judgment
  • Clear communicator who can work across teams and push for resolution
  • CPA or CPA-track is a plus, but not required
  • Experience with AppFolio or similar systems is a plus

Who This Role May Fit

  • Senior Accountant ready to step up
  • Accounting Manager seeking broader ownership
  • Assistant Controller looking for a larger role
  • Controller from a smaller platform looking for a growth opportunity

What Success Looks Like

  • Better ownership and follow-through on finance and accounting issues
  • Tighter monthly close and review processes
  • Better reporting and visibility for ownership
  • Stronger coordination between ownership, operations, and the outside accounting firm
  • Better cash visibility, payment controls, and treasury coordination
  • Less day-to-day dependence on ownership to push accounting and finance items through
  • A stronger financial foundation as the company continues to grow

Compensation

$100,000 to $130,000, based on experience and fit.
