Controller/Finance Manager

Job Summary: The Controller is a key financial leader responsible for the overall financial management of the organization. This role includes the preparation of GAAP financial statements for internal and external stakeholders, overseeing the monthly close process, and managing payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. The Controller will supervise a small accounting team, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations while maintaining robust internal controls. This position requires effective communication with management and the board of directors and plays a crucial role in budget preparation and financial planning for grants and contracts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and distribute GAAP financial statements for internal and external use.
  • Oversee the monthly book close process, including the preparation of journal entries and financial analyses.
  • Manage payroll processing, including deductions and benefits payments.
  • Supervise accounts payable and receivable operations.
  • Ensure the accurate completion of tax returns and other official reporting forms.
  • Lead and mentor a small accounting team, fostering professional development.
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget and program budgets.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls over financial processing and reporting, including the agency finance policy manual.
  • Assist in preparing budgets for grant and contract applications and track spending monthly.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable rules, laws, and regulations.
  • Communicate financial insights and updates to management and the board of directors.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and tax regulations.
  • Proven experience in budget preparation and financial forecasting.
  • Experience supporting annual audits by independent CPA firms.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience communicating with management, boards of directors, and other stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Paychex.
  • Experience supervising a small staff and/or contractors.
  • Familiarity with non-profit organizations, fund accounting, and compliance with government grants.
  • Strong leadership abilities and experience in team management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Work environment and Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit and use the computer. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; stoop, kneel or crouch; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Travel by car for this position includes travel by car independently or as part of a small group 10% of a business week, during some periods. Also, travel by car may include attending meetings representing the agency, and negotiating the purchase of equipment or vehicles.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $125,000.00 - $129,000.00 per year
