Controls Engineer

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, and support automation and control systems that drive efficiency and productivity in our fabrication processes. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in PLC programming, HMI development, and industrial automation, with the ability to integrate controls into complex fabrication systems. This role requires hands-on problem-solving, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and a passion for optimizing manufacturing operations through smart automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, program, and implement control systems for fabrication machinery and automation projects.
  • Develop and maintain PLC, HMI, and SCADA programs for equipment operation and monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues with control systems, sensors, and automation equipment.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate controls into new and existing equipment.
  • Support continuous improvement projects by identifying opportunities for automation and process optimization.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical and safety standards (NEC, OSHA, NFPA).
  • Create technical documentation, schematics, and manuals for control systems.
  • Provide training and support to production and maintenance teams on control system operation.
  • Assist with vendor selection, component specification, and system integration.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in controls engineering or industrial automation (fabrication/manufacturing environment preferred).
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Strong knowledge of sensors, actuators, robotics, and motor control systems (VFDs, servos, etc.).
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics using CAD tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred
  • Experience with robotic welding or CNC automation in metal fabrication.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and process improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems for manufacturing integration.
