Director of Strategic Communications
SUMMARY
The School Family Communications Coordinator provides strategic and operational support for division-wide family communications, ensuring families are informed, engaged, and connected to their child’s school and the division. This role leads the development of family-facing messaging and campaigns that build trust, strengthen relationships, and promote understanding of key initiatives and priorities.
The School Family Communications Coordinator supports schools in developing effective communication practices, with a focus on consistency, accessibility, and cultural responsiveness. In particular, this role will be a linchpin in helping school communities tell their stories, while building relationships and trust, especially among multilingual families. This position plays a key role in advancing ‘last mile communications’ for division strategic initiatives and increasing engagement. This is a three-year grant-funded position. Renewal beyond three years is contingent upon available funding.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads the development and execution of family-focused communications campaigns to increase awareness, engagement, and trust.
- Develops tools, templates, and messaging to support consistent, high-quality school-level communications, including newsletters, social media, and responsive communications practices.
- Writes, edits, and translates content for division communication platforms, including but not limited to ParentSquare, RPS Direct, and social media, with targeted messaging for specific student and family groups.
- Leads family-focused communications for key division initiatives, including strategic priorities and engagement campaigns.
- Partners with central office teams to develop and implement internal and external communications plans.
- Coaches and advises school leaders on effective, best practice family communication strategies and supports the development of school-based communication plans.
- Collaborates with other members of the Communications Department to align school and family communications with decision-wide campaigns and messaging.
- Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of communications efforts, using data and feedback to inform improvements.Supports crisis and time–sensitive communications to families, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Develops and maintains communication calendars to coordinate messaging across schools and Central Office.
- Provides guidance and support for school-based staff managing communications platforms and tools.
- Assists in planning and promoting family engagement events and initiatives.
- Provides coaching, training, and performance feedback to ensure alignment amongst reports with program goals.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in journalism, communications, or a related field required.
- Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in communications, education, journalism, or a related field.
- Fluency in written and spoken Spanish required.
- Extensive writing or production experience preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid Virginia driver's license and willingness to use personal automobile.

- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment requiring responsiveness to urgent student and family needs.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and timelines.
- Willingness and availability to work outside standard business hours.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences.
- Translation and interpretation abilities
- Frequent collaboration across internal teams and with external agencies.Availability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects. Work involves frequent sitting, talking, hearing, and the use of hands to operate a computer and standard office equipment. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, bend, kneel, or reach with hands and arms to retrieve or file materials. Fine finger dexterity and visual acuity are required to prepare and review documents, enter data, and perform administrative or analytical tasks with accuracy.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment within a school or central administrative setting. The position involves minimal exposure to environmental hazards or physical risks. Tasks are typically performed in a climate-controlled space with access to computers, telephones, and other standard office resources. The work is deadline-driven and may require managing multiple priorities, coordinating with colleagues across departments, and maintaining concentration amid frequent
interruptions or high-volume periods of activity.
