Salary Range: $5,271 - $7,082 Monthly

The Washington State Department of Corrections’ Correctional Industries (CI) division is seeking a creative and strategic communications professional to join their team as the Correctional Industries Brand & Communications Designer (Communications Consultant 4)! The goal of this position is to help advance and strengthen the CI brand and mission through various communication methods.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, dynamic marketing and communications team and play a key role in developing compelling visual and written content that promotes the value and impact of Correctional Industries programs. The candidate of choice will serve as a lead within the marketing and communications function and works closely with the CI Webmaster to develop and execute branding and marketing initiatives. The incumbent leads projects from concept to completion, ensuring consistent messaging and the delivery of high-quality marketing materials that support organizational goals and enhance brand awareness.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications and a proven ability to create effective marketing collateral and engaging content across multiple platforms. This position requires a highly creative and detail-oriented professional who thrives in both collaborative and independent settings and can successfully manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Strong written communication skills, creative problem-solving, and the ability to translate ideas into impactful visual and written materials are essential to success in this role.

Duties

As a Communications Consultant 4, some of your duties will include:

  • Planning, coordinating, and preparing written and visual CI communications which could look like:
    • Facilitating meetings to gather initial business need and uses design expertise to develop solutions
    • Illustrating concepts by designing visual art based upon unique project need, organization brand standards, and accessibility rules
    • Contributing, preparing, editing and proofreading written content for CI publications
    • Creating a wide range of communication materials, including graphics, reports, brochures/catalogs, logos, flyers, signs, events materials, etc. using Adobe Creative Suite
    • Ensuring effective design concepts, standards and consistency of all CI projects statewide
  • Serving as the subject matter expert to ensure brand consistency in internal and external publications to include:
    • Using Adobe Creative Suite, creating draft publications, incorporating recommended changes into the final design, while directing changes to ensure they reflect established style and brand guidelines
    • Determining logos, color schemes, fonts, etc. used for promotional, educational, and general materials across all forms of publications
    • Ensuring all publication assets are appropriately licensed for use as needed.
    • Reviewing and editing submitted content
  • Presentations, Events, and Social Media to include:
    • Working with stakeholders on event planning related to communication needs (i.e. invitations, signage, presentation/tradeshow booth materials, etc.) from design to finished products
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):

  • High school diploma or equivalent

AND

  • Four (4) years paid graphic design and communications experience

OR

  • Bachelors degree accredited college in Graphic Design, Marketing, Communications or closely related field

In addition to the above education/experience, the below knowledge, skills and/or abilities are required:

  • Adobe Creative Suites expert with extensive experience using InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, and ability to conceptualize, design, and produce a variety of materials.
  • Knowledge of traditional marketing publications, visual communication design, and electronic presentations
  • Strong written and verbal communications and customer service skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teams

What will make your application stand out (preferred qualifications):

  • Experience working with commercial printers, to include providing detailed publication specifications, obtaining cost estimates, and press checks
  • High level organization required to prioritize projects, meet deadlines, and work independently.

Telework Details
This position may be allocated for telework. If authorized for the role, work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
