Location: Washington Corrections center for Women | Gig Harbor, WA
Salary Range: $6,046 - $8,129 Monthly

This position is represented by the Teamsters 117 bargaining unit and requires the candidate of choice to work in facility for each shift.

This recruitment may be utilized to fill multiple positions.

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking an experience and dedicated public servant to join the Washington corrections Center for Women as a Corrections & Custody Officer 3! This position supports the Department's mission to improve public safety by supervising corrections and custody officers and performing custody work.

As a CCO3, you will maintain custody and control of offenders at Washington Corrections Center Women, an adult correctional facility. This is also a supervisory position that promotes safety and security by directing lower-level staff in controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of adult offenders.

By maintaining security of the institution and controlling movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures, the Corrections and Custody Officer 3 ensures the safety of offenders, staff and the public. You will also be responsible for providing excellent communication to upper leadership regarding current and potential situations occurring in the facility.

Duties

As a Corrections & Custody Officer 3, some of your duties will include:
  • Supervising corrections and custody officers which could look like:
    • Planning, assigning and reviewing the work of staff, adjusting assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and responding to fluctuating workloads
    • Providing on-the-job training and monitoring completion of the on-the-job training requirements of in- training Corrections and Custody Officers
    • Serving as a positive role model for other officers.
    • Evaluating employee performance and preparing performance appraisals
  • Ensuring security of institution and control movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures to include:
    • Working with all staff within area of control to enhance staff safety and security. Provide subordinate staff with the tools and skills needed to perform duties in a safe and secure manner
    • Monitoring offender activities and movements by observing offender activity at close range or at a distance and visually monitoring all security areas
    • Supervise and assist lower-level staff in these tasks for quality control.
    • Overseeing the operation of gates, cameras, turnstiles, sally ports and other movement control systems to ensure the safe and orderly movement of offenders, staff, and the public to and from authorized areas of the facility
  • Applying appropriate, constructive, and professional authority working with a diverse population of offenders
  • Ensuring searches and inspections are carried out in accordance with established department methods and procedures
  • Communicating information to supervisors and staff regarding issues and areas of concern

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):
  • High school diploma or equivalent
AND
  • Three years’ experience as a correctional officer in adult corrections.
OR
  • Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college-level course work
AND
  • Two years’ experience as a correctional officer in adult corrections

Telework Details
This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
