A Brief Overview

TriNet is looking for a Counsel, Data, Security, and Technology who has a demonstrable interest in privacy, information security, and regulatory compliance. This role will be responsible for providing advice and counsel regarding data protection and regulatory compliance for TriNet’s operations globally with a focus on privacy, data governance, cybersecurity, and technology operations. They will research emerging areas of law, evaluate and mitigate risks, and build actionable frameworks for implementing policies and regulatory requirements. Experience with negotiating technology vendor agreements and an understanding of data governance and artificial intelligence be especially useful.

Reporting directly to the Director & Senior Counsel, Data Security & Technology, they will work as part of a cross-functional team of data and technology professionals supporting departments across the organization.


What you will do

  • Assess the risk of complying with emerging developments in technology law, including laws related to privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and balance the goals of growth and scaling with the risk associated with our legal requirements.
  • Work closely with internal business teams on long-term data protection projects to guide their implementation of privacy and security controls.
  • Assess the risk of complying with emerging developments in technology law, including laws related to privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and balance the goals of growth and scaling with the risk associated with our legal requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the technology, privacy and security teams and provide day-to-day subject matter expertise.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to the commercial legal and sales teams during negotiation of privacy and data protection agreements.
  • Advise business teams on day-to-day questions about data privacy obligations and commitments.
  • Determine the risk to the business of changes in data processing and advising business teams on new or changed uses of data.
  • Develop new policy documents in response to changes in legal requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Incident Response teams.
  • Support the Information Risk Management program and other similar programs.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school required

Experience Qualifications

  • Typically 5+ years of privacy, technology, or information security legal experience, or experience in an adjacent area with similar regulatory requirements.
  • In-house legal experience a plus.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of enterprise technology and SaaS solutions.
  • Knowledge of IT risk management and Information Security principles.
  • Functional knowledge of common privacy and cybersecurity regulatory frameworks (e.g., CCPA, GDPR, HIPAA, NIST CSF, and FTC guidelines, etc.).
  • A thorough understanding of the legal side of the technology lifecycle at a complex organization.
  • Proven track record with providing advice and counsel to executives.
  • Experience with advising a business on navigating the rapidly evolving privacy law landscape.
  • Understanding of legal and regulatory issues related to data governance and artificial intelligence.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization, including effectively communicating with executive level employees.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace
  • Ability to adapt to a fast paced continually changing business and work environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Bar Admission Member in good standing with the applicable State Bar required.
  • Any IAPP certifications, such as CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, or AIGP will be considered a plus.
  • Other certifications in the cybersecurity, risk management, and fraud prevention areas are also a plus.

The preferred location for this role is Atlanta, GA, and the salary range for this location is $122,200.00 to $268,900.00. All qualified external applicants will be considered for an in-office role, based in Atlanta. All qualified internal candidates are encouraged to apply and consider relocation to Atlanta and may be considered for remote hire at the company’s discretion. The candidate’s final salary offer will be based on the candidate’s skills, education, work location and experience.

A candidate’s compensation may also include bonuses consistent with TriNet’s corporate bonus plan.
