A Brief Overview
TriNet is seeking a strategic and collaborative Counsel, Data, Security, and Technology who has a demonstrable interest in data governance, privacy, information security, and regulatory compliance. This role will be responsible for leading data governance initiatives for TriNet’s operations globally. Reporting directly to the Director & Senior Counsel, Data Security & Technology, they will be part of a cross-functional team of data and technology professionals working to ensure that data is managed, maintained, and utilized as a strategic asset, aligning TriNet’s goals and requirements with our legal and regulatory responsibilities.
What you will do
- Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance strategy.
- Establish and lead the Data Governance Council(s) and collaborate with key stakeholders to establish data governance policies and standards.
- Provide leadership and direction to other members of the data governance team.
- Provide subject matter expertise to the Data & Analytics team and the Global Technology Organization.
- Serve as the primary conduit between the Legal and Compliance team and the broader enterprise with respect to data governance.
- Policy Development & Compliance
- Assess the risk of complying with emerging developments in laws and regulations impacting data governance, with a particular focus on laws related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, privacy, and cybersecurity.
- Define and enforce existing data governance policies, procedures, and standards.
- Develop new policy documents in response to changes in legal requirements.
- Ensure compliance with data governance frameworks and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the creation and maintenance of data dictionaries, data catalogs, and metadata management.
- Assess the risk of complying with emerging changes in data protection laws and balance the goals of growth and scaling with the risk to our data protection requirements
- Determine the risk to the business of changes in data processing and advise business teams accordingly.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with internal business teams on long-term data protection projects to guide their implementation of privacy and security controls.
- Work closely with the Data & Analytics team and the Global Technology Organization, along with other stakeholders to ensure data governance initiatives are aligned with business objectives.
- Work closely with the AI Governance Program
- Promote data governance awareness and best practices across the organization.
- Foster a culture of data stewardship and accountability within the organization.
- Communicate data governance and quality goals, progress, and outcomes to senior management.
- Risk Management
- Balance the goals of growth and scaling TriNet’s data operations with the risk associated with our legal requirements.
- Determine the risk to the business of changes in data processing and advise business teams on new or changed uses of data.
- Performs other duties as assigned

Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Science, Business Administration, Library & Information Science, Statistics or Mathematics or other relevant fields or equivalent experience preferred
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school preferred.
Experience Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required

- In house legal or compliance experience related to data governance or technology law generally is a plus.

- Proven track record with providing advice and counsel to executives. (Basic Proficiency)
- Experience with advising a business on navigating the rapidly evolving privacy law landscape. (Basic Proficiency)
- Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (Basic Proficiency)
- Functional knowledge of common privacy and cybersecurity regulatory frameworks (e.g., CCPA, GDPR, HIPAA, NIST CSF, and FTC guidelines, etc.). (Basic Proficiency)
- Knowledge of IT risk management and Information Security principles (Basic Proficiency)
- Knowledge of IT risk management and Information Security principles. (Basic Proficiency)
- Ability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization, including effectively communicating with executive level employees

Licenses and Certifications
- Certification in data governance or data quality (e.g., CDMP, DGSP) preferred
- Any IAPP certifications, such as CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, or AIGP will be considered a plus.
- Other certifications in the cybersecurity, risk management, and fraud prevention areas are also a plus.

The preferred location for this role is Atlanta, GA, and the salary range for this location is $122,200.00 to $268,900.00. All qualified external applicants will be considered for an in-office role, based in Atlanta. All qualified internal candidates are encouraged to apply and consider relocation to Atlanta and may be considered for remote hire at the company’s discretion. The candidate’s final salary offer will be based on the candidate’s skills, education, work location and experience.
A candidate’s compensation may also include bonuses consistent with TriNet’s corporate bonus plan.
