Job Description

Key accountabilities

The Counsel will report to the Managing Counsel for Egypt & Libya. Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Provision of advice to senior leadership of the Region on legal aspects of a broad range of business, governance, and ethical issues which may arise. This includes identifying and highlighting business and legal risks and developing effective and practical strategies for the management of these.
  • Effective liaison with central bp Legal teams, including involvement of and liaison with bp Legal specialists as necessary.
  • Planning, organizing and leading the provision of legal support both internal and external to complex projects that have strategic value and significant financial impact.
  • Working closely with and fostering an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration with the Region legal team located across Cairo, the wider Region and specialist teams located outside the Region.
  • Handling relationships with law firms across the Region within the area of responsibility.
Key challenges:
  • Providing commercial and legal operational support across a range of complex operated and non-operated assets, primarily in Egypt and Libya.
demonstrating and ing legal skills, corporate and departmental policies to complex legal assignments requiring maturity and judgement.
Identifying potential legal implications in cases and proposing legally sound solutions.
Supporting the business on the expansion and growth of the Egypt business through a number of new access and business opportunities and initiatives in the Region.
Handling disputes and coordinating with external law firm on the strategies as deemed necessary.

Essential experience and job requirements

This role is only for Egyptian nationals.

  • Substantial transactional and negotiations experience in supporting the delivery of upstream and/or commercial projects, and in establishing corporate and contractual joint ventures.
  • A proven record of commercial awareness with high quality contribution to business strategy and delivery.
  • Strong client counselling skills with demonstrable ability to assess and effectively communicate relevant legal and business risks.
  • Able to deal with unstructured/undefined issues or problems and deal with ambiguous and commercially uncertain situations.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills with the ability to prioritise conflicting demands and manage the delivery of legal services across a broad and varied business base.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to develop effective relationships with and work closely and engage proactively with business colleagues and legal colleagues based locally and in other locations.
  • Drive, commitment, a bias for action and a preparedness to collaborate and innovate.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • The ability to lead and contribute to represent BP Legal within the Region.
  • Ability to draft and negotiate legal agreements in Arabic and English.
Qualified to practice law in Egypt.

Desirable

Preferably 10 years’ experience as a lawyer in a in the legal department of a reputable energy company.
Experience of civil codes and implementing or supporting projects across different jurisdictions.
