Salary/Wage
Starting salary range: $84,712.56 – $134,411.78 annually.
Academic training and teaching experience will form the basis for salary computation as determined by placement on the regular salary schedule of the College. A maximum of step 8 at the appropriate salary grade will be awarded to new faculty. Primary Function
The Counselor/Assistant Professor (Financial Aid) will be primarily responsible for providing academic, personal, and career counseling services including developing educational plans and delivering follow-up services to financial aid students.

Minimum Qualifications
Must meet one of the sets of qualifications listed under 1) through 3):
  • A Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in any of the disciplines listed in a) above AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), pursuant to Title 5, Section 53410.1 of the California Code of Regulations.
  • A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of the qualifications in either 1) or 2) above. You must complete and attach the Application for Equivalency form (www.palomar.edu/hr/equivalency-app/), if you do not possess the specific minimum qualifications as stated above, which includes degrees that have not been awarded at the time of submitting the application.


Only coursework completed at, and degrees awarded by, accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered as satisfying the minimum qualifications. Coursework and degrees that are completed outside of the United States are required to have transcripts evaluated (evaluation to U.S. equivalency and a course by course analysis) by an appropriate U.S. credentials evaluation service. Preferred Qualifications
  • Commitment to a student learning-centered college.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in Counseling and its instructional program.
  • Experience in college-level academic, personal, and career counseling, preferably at a California community college including experience with counseling students transferring from a California community college to a four-year university.
  • Experience conducting counseling-related classes, workshops, and orientations with a culturally responsive lens.
  • Proficiency in computer applications related to counseling including use of the Microsoft 365 and video meetings software.
  • Recent training and/or experience in crisis counseling and/or specialized experience providing personal counseling.
  • Possession of professional licenses or certificates related to the position.
  • Experience with or knowledge of Federal and State Financial Aid programs, processes and requirements impacting financial aid students.
  • Fluency in an additional language other than English. Spanish preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to the counseling responsibilities, other duties and institutional responsibilities include maintaining regular office hours, developing curriculum, program review and planning, developing and assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in department activities and college governance. Related duties include the following:
  • Meeting students in individual and group settings to provide academic, career and personal counseling services.
  • Conducting orientation activities.
  • Utilizing multiple computer applications and resources, including electronic data entry documenting the delivery of core student success services and the maintenance of related reporting elements.
  • Keeping current with the Palomar College curricula as well as articulation and transfer requirements to other colleges and universities.
  • Participating in retention and outreach efforts and activities on and off campus, specific to financial aid population such as planning and assisting in projects, special events and other activities.
  • Attends training and workshops to stay current on financial aid program rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Teaching counseling classes and developing related counseling curriculum as needed.
  • Administering and interpreting appropriate career assessments.
  • Developing and conducting workshops relevant to student success.
  • Providing distance counseling services.
  • Supporting student success activities in collaboration with instructional divisions as needed.
  • Performing other duties as required.

  • This is a full-time, 11 months per year, tenure-track position. Counseling assignments will include day, evening, and/or weekend counseling hours and/or classes at the San Marcos campus and/or off-campus locations as part of contract responsibilities, as well as distance education classes. Full-time faculty are expected to participate fully in departmental activities and college governance and hold regular office hours.
