Job Summary:

CASES is seeking a Court Representative. The Court Representative will play a pivotal role in fostering and maintaining professional relationships with judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, and other key court partners to facilitate program admissions and uphold CASES’ credibility within the Manhattan Criminal and Supreme Courts. The Court Representative involves evaluating an individual’s legal eligibility for the Supervised Release Program (SRP), conducting comprehensive screenings, and ensuring participants receive appropriate supervision levels as mandated by court orders.

CASES’s Court Services department plays a pivotal role, offering court-mandated or endorsed programs throughout the criminal legal process. These programs, which include alternatives to detention and incarceration, are supported by the New York State Office of Court Administration and are integral to the judicial process. CASES collaborates with a broad network of stakeholders to provide these program options, benefiting thousands of defendants across various boroughs. The arraignment team's diligent screening of defendants for program eligibility, along with the intake assessment team's efforts to divert individuals into community-based programs, underscores CASES's commitment to its mission.

Salary: The salary range for the role is $58,000 - $60,000 per year

Shift Hours: This position is full-time Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Workplace Flexibility: In-Person - Staff roles designated as fully in person are eligible for in- person work place differential pay.

What You Will Be Doing:

• A Court Representative is responsible for developing and maintaining outstanding professional relationships with judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court affiliates to streamline program admissions and uphold CASES' reputation in the Manhattan Criminal and Supreme Courts.
• Assess an individual's legal eligibility for the SRP by reviewing arrest case details, RAP sheets, and attorney recommendations to ensure that participants admitted receive the proper level of supervision as mandated by the court upon admission.
• Conduct screenings and assessment interviews to explain SRP, utilize screening tools, and formulate immediate recommendations for supervision and case management services.
• The Court Representative will ensure that participants comprehend the conditions of their pretrial supervision release and the expectations regarding their participation in the SRP.
• Escort participants to court appearances and advocate before judges, both verbally and through written reports, for the participants' continued involvement in the Suspension Representation Project (SRP).
• The Court Representative will ensure effective collaboration with SRP staff in borough-based offices, guaranteeing that the Court is provided with precise information and that participants meet the conditions of supervision. They will also provide prompt and accurate notifications to the Court regarding participant non-compliance, such as when participants are missing, have absconded, fail to report, or are re-arrested.
• Maintain a consistent and flexible schedule, including obscure hours, and adapt to schedule changes to ensure continuous coverage for all court shifts as part of the SRP; carry out additional related tasks as directed by supervisors and senior staff.
• Help ensure we maintain a safe working environment by reporting any hazards or unsafe conditions, e.g., liquid spill in hallway, to the appropriate facilities staff member or supervisor.

• Bachelor's degree required or at least 4 years of relevant work experience.
• Ability to function effectively in a high-paced, high-stakes environment and work independently.
• Highly articulate, resourceful, and professional, able to stand up in court and present detailed information.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse participants and staff.
• Excellent public speaking skills.
• Interest in, and sensitivity to, issues facing justice-involved individuals.
• Ability to formulate persuasive arguments for eligible defendants to be placed in CASES programs.
• Excellent analytical and written skills.
