The Law Department consists of three divisions: the City Attorney's Office, the City Prosecutor's Office, and Management Services. The Prosecutor's Office prosecutes misdemeanor crimes that occur within the city of Phoenix. Some examples of these crimes are: DUI, domestic violence, indecent exposure, threats, and criminal damage. The Law Department is currently seeking candidates to fill vacancies in the Prosecutor's Office Victim Services Unit (VSU) and Legal Clerk Unit (LCU).

Victim Services Unit

This Unit performs both critical and/or legally mandated functions related to victims' rights such as sending victim notification letters, restitution request processing, ensuring victims have court escorts, and ensuring that emergency services are available and provided to victims. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Legal Clerk Unit

This Unit collaborates with criminal staff attorneys to prepare and manage cases including document and evidence management, obtaining victim and witness availability for trial, clerical support such as motion filing and subpoenaing, ensuring cases are prepared for the prosecutor at trial. Some positions in this unit may be required to work an alternate schedule to include weekends.

The job duties include providing customer service, problem solving, the ability to work cooperatively as part of team, and the ability to communicate effectively. Reviewing files, documents, and printed material for accuracy and completeness; providing information to staff, coworkers or the public via phone and/or email; proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and operating a computer terminal. It also requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stretch, bend and stoop.

Essential duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Running daily reports through various programs.
  • Updating/maintaining a high volume of cases in a Criminal Management System.
  • Processing a high volume of outgoing mail.
  • Converting, copying, scanning and attaching necessary material as PDF documents into databases.
  • Answering multi-line phone system; screening and transferring calls, as needed.
  • Processing incoming requests via mail, email, and in-person.
  • Maintaining confidentiality with client files and case notes in compliance with professional standards and victims' rights.
  • Provide back-up coverage to team members and other areas, as needed.
  • Work in a cubicle environment with noise and frequent interruptions.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Is detail oriented.
  • Ability to interact professionally with members of the public, judges, attorneys, and other staff in the legal system.
  • Ability to perform clerical tasks that involve legal terminology and processes.
  • Possesses strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, scanner, telephone, calculator, copy machine, and fax machine.
  • Familiar with Rules of Court, Evidence, Discovery and Victims' Rights.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of team.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and operating a computer terminal.

SALARY


Pay Range: $20.51 to $33.41 per hour.

Hiring Range: $20.51 to $27.49 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 341. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of clerical or public contact experience, including a minimum of one year in a courtroom or law office.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Spanish language skills are desirable.
  • Experience working in a legal setting utilizing a document and case management system.
  • Experience with reading, interpreting, and applying Legal Rules, Regulations and Procedures.
  • Front desk/customer service experience.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
