Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Two years of law enforcement experience utilizing the rules of evidence custody; two years of advanced clerical experience in processing court records; or one year of experience in courtroom or hearing room procedures is required. Must be able to lift evidence boxes weighing up to 50 pounds. Must successfully pass a background investigation to include physical and polygraph examinations. As a condition of employment, must successfully pass periodic polygraph examinations.

POSITION SUMMARY

Working in the Evidence Vault Unit, the Court Evidence Records Specialist is responsible for storage of all physical evidence for Felony, Misdemeanor and Traffic cases. Evidence received in the Evidence Vault is securely stored and released for courts action. The Evidence specialist maintains detailed and accurate records for all property and evidence in the custody of the Clerk of Courts and Comptroller’s Office. This ensures compliance with statutory rules, policies, directives, communication with Court Officials and various agencies regarding evidence and court procedures and conducts extensive research to disposal of evidence that meets the established disposal criteria.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receiving, securing, storing, and releasing evidence for court actions.
  • Maintain detailed records of evidence received.
  • Ensure security and take precautionary measures to protect evidence.
  • Creates and updates information in the Evidence Vault Tracking System.
  • Assists the State Attorney’s Office, Appeals Unit, and/or other agencies requiring copies or viewing of evidence.
  • Research cases for disposal pursuant to the established disposal criteria.
  • Assist the Supervisor in retrieving requested evidence located in various locations.
  • Process requests from the State Attorney, Public Defender and the public through the Criminal Evidence Vault Request Inbox.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Criminal Information System (CJIS), and Traffic Information System (TIS).
  • Ability to utilize research techniques to obtain information for Felony, Traffic, Misdemeanor, and Branch court cases.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is primarily performed in office environment, with extended periods at a computer. May involve light lifting (up to 10 lbs).
