Crate Builder

Job Title: Crate Builder

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Overview:
The Crate Builder will construct custom wooden crates and pallets for shipping, storage, and transportation. This role will require experience with hand and power tools to assemble materials according to specifications and blueprints. This hands-on role demands attention to detail, physical stamina, and knowledge of safety standards and materials to ensure crates provide adequate protection for various items and goods to be shipped.

Essential Duties:
(Additional duties may be assigned as required.)
  • Measure, cut, and assemble wood and other materials to build crates, pallets, and skids using tools like nail guns, saws, and drills.
  • Interpret blueprints and customer requirements to design custom crates for specific items.
  • Move and organize materials, fasteners, and lumber.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure crates meet safety and performance standards and are suitable for shipping and contain the correct documentation when required.
  • Perform light maintenance and keep the work area clean and organized for safety.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, including whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Abilities:
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to read tape measures and take accurate measurements.
  • Tool Proficiency: Experience operating hand and power tools, including nail guns, staple guns, and various saws.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read blueprints and understand carpentry or manufacturing processes.
  • Attention to Detail: Crucial for accurate assembly and ensuring durability and compliance with shipping standards.
  • Physical Stamina: The ability to handle physical tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Safety Awareness: Adherence to safety protocols and a commitment to a safe work environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to wear safety glasses and hard sole/close toed shoes with a low heel when walking through the manufacturing shop and/or repair shop whether as part of performing their job or just passing through. In addition, long hair must be tied back when around hazards of flame, machinery, or equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
