Credentialed Firefighter/EMT (Firefighter/EMT)

Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule


Positions available with the Fire Department, various locations
Salary Range: $20.40-$44.14/hour (hourly rates varies based on assigned schedule)
Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. during Academy, some Saturdays required. Upon completion of training, 12-hour or 24-hour shifts.

Responsibilities


About the role

This role responds to fires, medical emergencies, and other critical incidents to protect lives and property. You will operate firefighting and rescue equipment, provide emergency medical care within your training, and support public safety every day. This is a hands-on role with real impact on the community.

What you’ll do

  • Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls, operating pumper or ladder apparatus to control and extinguish fires and protect life and property
  • Use firefighting equipment such as hoses, nozzles, ladders, extinguishers, and rescue tools to safely manage emergency scenes
  • Provide emergency medical care during incidents such as accidents, drownings, or medical emergencies, following approved EMS procedures
  • Participate in fire drills, training, and inspections to maintain readiness and support fire prevention and public education efforts
  • Maintain and clean fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities to ensure everything is ready for emergency response
  • Assist with special emergency operations such as flooded basements, gas leaks, smoke investigations, or disaster response

Qualifications


REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must be a KCMO resident or move into the City of Kansas City within 9 months of start date.
  • You must be 18 years of age by June 15, 2026
  • You must not have turned 30 years of age prior to June 15, 2026
  • In computing the age of a person, the total length of the time that the person has previously served as a member of the Kansas City Fire Department may be deducted from the person’s actual age.
  • You must be a high school graduate (or possess a state-issued GED/HiSET)
  • You must possess a valid driver's license at time of application and appointment, and within 9 months of employment must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license
  • Must pass a preemployment drug screen and post offer physical
  • Must possess National Registry or State of Missouri EMT license
  • Must have Fire Fighter 1 and 2, HazMat Operations and HazMat Awareness
