Job Description
Do you have knowledge of Athletic fields and equipment maintenance? Are you great at leading and inspiring employees? If you answered yes to these questions, apply NOW! The Athletic Maintenance Division of Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism has an opening for Crew Leader.

The City is seeking a motivated and experienced Crew Leader to oversee and participate in the daily work of groundskeeping and equipment operator crews. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of City athletic fields, parks, school grounds, and municipal facilities. The Crew Leader is responsible for assigning and reviewing work, providing hands-on support, and ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and in line with the City’s Customer Care Standards.

What You’ll Do:
  • Lead and Supervise Crews: Assign daily work, monitor progress, and ensure staff have the proper tools and equipment. Train and coach team members, assist with scheduling, performance evaluations, and employee relations. May also supervise inmate work crews.
  • Grounds & Facility Maintenance: Participate in and oversee a wide range of maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, edging, landscaping, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, grading, paving, drainage, and general construction. Clean and stock restrooms, remove trash and debris, and support facility upkeep.
  • Operate Equipment: Safely use and maintain heavy and specialized equipment such as tractors, graders, dump trucks, backhoes, snowplows, mowers, trailers, and utility vehicles, along with a variety of power and hand tools. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and report deficiencies promptly.
  • Event & Logistical Support: Prepare and maintain athletic fields and facilities for programs, special events, and City-sponsored functions. Oversee set-up and breakdown of fields, bleachers, barricades, and other equipment, and manage post-event cleanup.
  • Safety & Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of turf areas, facilities, restrooms, parking lots, and parks to identify and resolve safety issues. Ensure compliance with all safety policies, laws, and best practices.
  • Administrative Tasks: Maintain records, logs, and work orders; track materials, equipment, and supply usage; support purchasing, budgeting, and contract monitoring. Assist with contractor oversight to ensure work meets specifications and standards.
  • Customer Service & Public Interaction: Respond to inquiries and concerns from citizens, contractors, and City staff in person, by phone, and electronically. Provide helpful, respectful, and professional service to a diverse community.
  • Professional Development: Attend meetings, trainings, and seminars to stay current on best practices, safety requirements, and new techniques.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires high school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
  • A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of hire.
  • Special skills or equipment certification may also be required.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and simple to complicated plans in the maintenance of facilities.


  • Basic computer skills and ability to write, read and use a calculator.

  • Have at least two years of supervisor experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, horticulture, facilities maintenance or other related field.

  • Customer service experience.

  • Knowledge of standard operations and best practices for general grounds keeping athletic field preparations, landscaping, repair work and maintenance.

  • May require a Class A commercial driver’s License.
