Job Duties:

  • Create data models which utilize report automation to communicate actionable crime trends utilizing SQL, Python, ArcGIS, or other computer language.
  • Utilize Police data information sources to advise and inform departmental leadership of important informational trends to assist in guiding the department to deliver successful outcomes by promoting a data-driven culture.
  • Design, implement, manage, and evaluate information reports and process which are intended to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery of public safety services.
  • Prepare official crime statistics for department.
  • Conduct a wide variety of research projects using diverse methodologies and technologies in order to collect, analyze and disseminate data and other pertinent information to other City officials. departments and the general public as well as state and federal agencies.
  • Compile, analyze, and forecast criminal data to identify patterns and trends to aid in prevention, suppression, and resolution of criminal activity.
  • Design, implement, manage, and evaluate information reports and process which are intended to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery of public safety services.
  • Create and distribute crime bulletins and crime alerts.
  • Perform complex data cleanup, data analysis, and data mining tasks.

Crime Analyst I (A.10, $57,012.80 - $88.358.40) or a

Crime Analyst II (A.12), $62,857.60- $97,427.20) depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Disqualifiers:

The following is a listing of "disqualifiers" or concerns that could result in you not being selected for employment. Please give consideration to these factors before applying. This is not an exhaustive listing.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.

Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.

Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelors degree OR four (4) years of experience in fields such as computer science, geography, criminal justice, information technology, business administration, or public administration as it relates to the knowledge, skills and abilities associated with this position. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

Master degree preferred
Experience as Crime Analyst
Experience with programming languages
Experience with ArcGIS or ArcPro (or equivalent)
Experience with report automation
Experience using data for problem-solving
Experience with Power BI (or equivalent)
Experience with project management
Experience with Law Enforcement policy/procedure

CJIS/VCIN/NCIC certification is required, in addition to the successful completion of a background check, candidates must have U.S. citizenship or be a lawful resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
