The Phoenix Police Department Laboratory Services Bureau is a nationally accredited forensic laboratory that provides technical assistance and training, evaluates and analyzes evidence, interprets results and provides expert testimony related to the full spectrum of physical evidence recovered from crime scenes. The scientific procedures utilized by the laboratory have the potential for linking a suspect to a crime, victim, or a scene.

Crime Scene Specialist I is the entry level class in the Crime Scene Specialist classification series. Crime Scene Specialists I's participate in a rigorous Crime Scene Training Program. Successful completion of the training program is required to pass probation and move forward with independent casework. Additional mentoring/training is required to work more complex crime scenes. Individuals that do not meet the requirement for Crime Scene Specialist II may underfill as a Crime Scene Specialist I.

Crime Scene Specialist II is the journey-level/experienced classification in the Crime Scene Specialist job series. A Crime Scene Specialist II works on more serious and complex crime scenes (e.g. homicides, officer involved shootings, death investigations, aggravated assaults, etc.) requiring technical skills and expertise. Duties include providing support to sworn personnel by photographing, analyzing, processing and collecting physical evidence. Work is completed primarily in the field at crime scenes.

Applicants who do not meet the experience requirements for the Crime Scene Specialist II classification may be considered for the Crime Scene Specialist I level. Shift, weekend, and holiday work are required for both positions.

SALARY

Crime Scene Specialist I

Pay Range: $24.34 to $32.62 per hour.

Hiring Range: $24.34 to $25.56 per hour.

Crime Scene Specialist II

Pay Range: $26.83 to $37.76 per hour.

Hiring Range: $26.83 to $34.25 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

Crime Scene Specialist I:

  • One year of experience in crime scene processing or photography, or an associate's degree in criminal justice, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work may be substituted.

Crime Scene Specialist II

  • One year of experience in crime scene processing and photography at the level of a Crime Scene Specialist I or its equivalent.
  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work may be substituted.

Both Positions

  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Positions in the Police Department must meet the background standards that are appropriate to non-sworn positions. The general factors for disqualification are listed here.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

which include, decomposing bodies, strong odors, insects, hostility, emotionally charged situations, child and animal victims.

  • Experience with or working:
    • Evidence collection and processing using a variety of technical equipment, materials, and processes.
    • Photographic methods and equipment as related to crime scene investigations and laboratory processing.
    • In adverse conditions
  • In a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Certifications related to crime scene investigations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Biology or related field.
