Criminal Justice Full-Time Faculty

Expected Start Date: Fall Semester, 2026

Summary

The Criminal Justice Faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses within the Criminal Justice programs and contributing to program development and continuous improvement efforts. This position requires active engagement with industry partners to ensure curriculum aligns with current workforce demands and standards. The faculty member will also serve as the program director for Criminal Justice and Corrections programs, and will coordinate the Michigan Certified Corrections Officer Academic Program Annual Report. Additional responsibilities include assessment activities, Advisory Committee coordination, and contributing to the growth and relevance of the program. Teaching assignments may include on-campus and online environments. A commitment to academic excellence, instructional innovation, and student success is essential.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Deliver high-quality instruction in Criminal Justice courses including, but not limited to: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminology, Corrections, and Ethics in Criminal Justice.
  • Develop and update curriculum and course materials that reflect industry standards and employer needs, with an emphasis on skill development and workforce readiness.
  • Complete Program Reviews and coordinate with the Perkins Grant Coordinator for annual reporting needs.
  • Integrate teaching strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and real-world application, including scenario-based learning, case study analysis, and active discussion.
  • Serve as Program Director for Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement and Corrections programs, including coordination of program-level activities and development efforts.
  • Coordinate the Michigan Certified Corrections Officer Academic Program, including responsibility for submitting the annual report to the Michigan Correctional Officers Training Council (MCOTC).
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to ensure continued compliance with MCOTC standards and to align curriculum with corrections officer certification requirements.
  • Support dual enrollment and articulation partnerships with secondary schools and technical education providers.
  • Participate in the assessment of student learning outcomes and contribute to program-level review and improvement efforts.
  • Engage in regular communication and collaboration with industry partners, advisory boards, and regional stakeholders to ensure program relevance and foster workforce connections.
  • Participate in college governance, professional development, and student success initiatives.
  • Teach across a variety of modalities including on campus, online, hybrid, and at correctional facilities, as needed.
  • Ensure all program documents (e.g. catalog, guide sheets, admission information, handbooks and web site) are current and accurate.
  • Assists in the Department scheduling, staffing and budget planning processes to efficiently utilize the college's resources.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or related field with 5 years of certified Michigan law enforcement experience or an Associate’s Degree with 8 years of certified Michigan law enforcement experience.
  • Experience and/or Certification in the following areas preferred:
  • DHS-Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP Instructor Training Course
  • DHS Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Law Enforcement Instructor Training Program (or like federal Law Enforcement/Military Police instructor training program.)
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation Instructor Development Program.

  • Core principles, theories, and practices in Criminal Justice, including law enforcement, corrections, criminal law and procedure, criminology, and ethics
  • Current industry standards, workforce expectations, and certification requirements relevant to law enforcement and corrections, including Michigan Certified Corrections Officer training standards
  • Instructional methods that support adult learners, student engagement, and applied learning in both in-person and online environments
  • Curriculum development, assessment of student learning outcomes, and continuous program improvement processes
  • The role of industry partnerships and advisory boards in maintaining program relevance and workforce alignment

Ability To

  • Deliver effective instruction using a variety of teaching strategies, including scenario-based learning, case studies, and active discussion
  • Coordinate and manage program-level responsibilities, including serving as program director and completing required state and institutional reporting
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, administrators, industry partners, and external agencies to support program quality and compliance
