Summary

Full-time/Part-time Full-Time Position Type Faculty Job Summary/Basic Function

The Criminal Justice Instructor is responsible for teaching in-person criminal justice courses. The home campus for this position will be Escanaba, with the opportunity to teach at other sites as mutually agreed upon. The focus of this position is teaching courses related to criminal justice, corrections, and law enforcement. This position also serves as the occupational program lead, which entails academic advising, program assessment, coordination, and development, as well as collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, especially those in Dickinson and Delta County. This is a full-time, tenure-track position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher (or 18 graduate level credits) in a criminal justice-related field with at least 3 years of experience in a criminal justice field, or a Bachelor’s degree in a criminal justice-related field with at least 5 years of experience in a criminal justice field
  • Teaching experience
  • Commitment to quality instruction in a learner-centered environment with the goal of consistently improving student success
  • Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy
  • Ability to provide inclusive and accessible teaching and learning approaches for diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated skill in effective written and oral communications
  • Demonstrated literacy in information technology and computer use
  • Willingness to learn and implement new teaching strategies as needed to enhance student success

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching at a community college
  • Experience teaching with a Learning Management System
  • Online teaching certification
  • Use of evidence-based teaching practices related to active and collaborative learning, critical thinking, and critical literacy and information skills
  • Flexibility and creativity in relation to the changing field of criminal justice
  • Deep understanding of legal and ethical frameworks
  • Demonstrated sound ethical judgement

Months Per Year Fall and Winter semesters (August - May) with the opportunity to teach summer courses. Hours Worked Per Week A full-time faculty workload of 15 contact hours represents a standard full-time commitment. Additional time is required for preparation, grading, student support, and service, bringing the total workload to approximately 40 hours per week on average. Facilitate Student Learning Through The Following Activities

  • Develop course syllabi that share with students the expectations, standards, policies, and learning outcomes and objectives of the course
  • Actively engage with students, fostering retention and success
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of assessments of course, program, and institutional learning outcomes
  • Use evidence-based pedagogical practices focused on student learning
  • Provide regular and substantive interaction and feedback to facilitate student belonging, engagement, and learning
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to diverse student populations and their learning needs, including disability accommodations
  • Develop and use supplementary learning materials, resources, and technology
  • Hold student hours in accordance with the master agreement
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records

Job Duty

Serve as Occupational Program Leader for the Criminal Justice Program, which may include:

  • Make recommendations for program scheduling
  • Make recommendations for staffing/hiring appropriate instructors to teach in the program
  • Order equipment and supplies and oversee facilities needed for the program
  • Coordinate Advisory Board meetings
  • Review programs through the PERT process and make recommendations for program improvement and curriculum revision
  • Participate in accreditation meetings, as appropriate, and serve functions required by program accrediting bodies

Job Duty

  • Coordinate and supervise internship experiences for students in the program.
  • Provide leadership in the development of the criminal justice program by working with those in the field on the local, regional, and state levels.
  • Collaborate with faculty within and across divisions and administration to determine scheduling of course offerings.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administration on curriculum development as needed.
  • Advise students on academic and career issues in collaboration with other academic advisors.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the field of criminal justice by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other teaching faculty, staff, and administration to ensure that all students receive instruction that promotes learning and growth.
  • Actively participate in division and college activities, including, but not limited to, professional development opportunities, student events, student organizations, etc.
  • Represent Bay College and higher education through advocacy and service in the communities in which you participate.
  • Establish working relationships with transfer institutions and community partners.
  • Actively participate in service to the college, including academic or administrative committees focused on continuous improvement, institutional policies, student outreach/engagement, and/or academic matters
  • Adhere to the ethical standards of the college, the State of Michigan, the Higher Learning Commission, FERPA, and other education regulations.
  • Provide a safe learning environment.
  • Communicate with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work with learning assistants, tutors, and/or student workers as needed.
  • Participate in professional activities such as, but not limited to, curriculum planning, syllabus writing, examination development, textbook selection, program revision, online teaching certification, and outcome assessment.
  • Any other duties as assigned
