What You'll Do

The Criticality Safety Office Supervisor is responsible for ensuring operations are in compliance with all applicable nuclear criticality safety requirements for a defined set of Y-12 capabilities and associated infrastructure.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide management oversight and technical guidance to ensure proper implementation of nuclear criticality safety (NCS) is maintained within the Y-12 Operations organization.
  • Provide technical capabilities in implementation of NCS to assure fissile materials are processed, stored, transferred, and handled safely so that personnel and property are protected against a criticality accident.
  • Supervise Criticality Safety Officers and provide guidance on technical documents, procedures, and controls.
  • Verify adequate implementation of requirements and controls on equipment, processes, and procedures is established prior to effective date of new or revised criticality safety documents.
  • Focus on continuous improvement in Criticality Safety and operational performance.
  • Implement and oversee surveillances, inspections, walkthroughs, appraisals, or audits of fissile material operations to ensure compliance with criticality safety requirements and NCS command media requirements.
  • Review, from an operations perspective, input to criticality safety documentation; ensure that CSO surveillances are performed; prepare and provide technical presentations and reports to management; assist with resolving minor non-compliances and deficiencies along with proactively monitoring trends to reduce future issues.
  • Ensure proper implementation and communication of NCS requirements in the facilities; coordinate changes in NCS documentation between Operations and Nuclear Criticality Safety Office; develop and control NCS posting requirements.
  • Facilitate consistency, standardization, and simplicity in the application of Criticality Safety across the organization and site; assist/coordinate NCS-related training activities.
  • Executing work within required cost and schedule agreements.
  • Ensure that corrective actions from non-conformant conditions are investigated and corrected in a timely manner through the CARB process.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
  • Thirteen (13) or more years of education and/or relevant experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant technical field (engineering, nuclear safety, physics, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Criticality Safety analysis process, Conduct of Operations, Integrated Safety management, Security Programs, and other safety management programs.
  • Leadership experience in complex technical environments and abnormal condition response experience.
  • Relevant experience in Criticality Safety Engineering or Criticality Safety Office roles.
  • Effective communicator, both orally and in writing with all levels of management.
  • Computer skills; understanding of technical operations; knowledge of plant operations, services and structure; conduct of operations; and integrated safety management.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
