CSSD Technician is responsible for all instruments, reprocessing works. He/she will support the CSSD in planning, organizing and implementing standards to ensure sterilization requirements for the whole hospital. Coordinate with the Operating Room team, Nurses, clinical and non-clinical departments for achieving competence in quality. He/she works towards achieving the mission and vision of NMC Royal Hospital, Sharjah.


CSSD Duties:

  • Perform and meet the sterilization requirements for operation theatre, wards, intensive care unit, emergency department, Cath lab, dialysis unit, out-patient departments, etc. Also ensuring that the requirements are dispatched timely with complete documentation.

  • Prepare packs and consumables.

  • Maintain adequate inventory of CSSD consumables and sterile sets that are needed for surgery. Stock levels are reviewed at the end of each day, and future requirements are forecasted and replenished accordingly.

  • Ensure that sterilized sets, instruments and consumables carry a valid expiry date. Items which have been expired are re-autoclaved with supporting documentation.

  • Perform quality control tests: biological test, Bowie-Dick test for the autoclave on daily basis and document the results for future reference. Do the necessary action in case of any indicator failure.

  • Follow the recall policy when required.

  • Coordinate with hospital Biomedical Department for periodic preventive maintenance for all equipment.

  • Coordinate with infection control surveillance team for periodic culture studies od CSSD.

  • Assist and collect data for key performance indicator and participates in the measurement of these indicators.

  • Maintain monthly statistics and monthly reports.

  • Document and report appropriately.

  • Assist for orientation of new staff to the workflow and responsibilities in CSSD.
  • Update self with the latest advancements in the field and utilizing the knowledge in the improvisation of the unit.

  • Assist to prepare and update policy and protocols for CSSD.

  • Perform the quality inspection in other disinfection/sterilization units of the facility as per the instruction of the CSSD Supervisor.

  • Operate and maintain all the reprocessing equipment as per the manufacturer instructions.

Maintenance of Reprocessing equipment:

  • Perform competency in point of care testing and ensure quality requirements.

  • Able to handle all equipment in the unit like:

  • Air gun

  • Water gun

  • Washer disinfector

  • Automatic heat-sealing machine

  • Dryer

  • Autoclaves

  • Ultrasonic washer

  • Sterrad 100NX gas plasma sterilizer

  • Instruments quality inspecting devices

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order, reporting any fault to CSSD Supervisor/Engineering Department.

  • Assisting in making ward requirements, stock verification and inventories.

  • Prevent wastage and misuse of supplies.

Management of Emergencies:

  • Conversant and efficient in dealing with emergency procedures, i.e., fire.

  • Report of any untoward incident or accident in the hospital premises involving a patient, visitor or staff member.

General Requirements:

  • Perform duties according to the hospital policies and Ministry of Health regulations.

  • Perform duties within the scope of practice.

  • Maintain the infection control principles in everyday practice.

  • Maintain the safe working environment.

  • Follow the International Patient Safety Goals.

  • Participation in orientation and guidance of new Nursing staff.

  • Participation in department/unit meetings.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT / EDUCATION

  • Adhere to dress code.

  • Wear ID card while on duty, use computerized punch time system correctly.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

  • Active participation in performance improvement and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.

  • Maintain professional skills.

  • Update current practice.

  • Attend annual CPR review and certification.

  • Attend available CSSD related workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.

  • Read current CSSD related journals, publications, etc.

  • Continuous update of professional portfolio.

  • Display and accomplish required competency with great deal of efficiencies.

  • Learn/maintain working knowledge of the Arabic language.

  • Good posture, physical fitness and personal hygiene.

  • Alert and active, sound mind.

  • Work flexibility and adaptability.


2 years of certified CSSD Technician course. Minimum 2 years of experience.

CSSD Technician should be skilled in receiving, handling, washing, sorting, checking, autoclaving and delivering all sorts of packs and instruments to be used in the whole hospital
