Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for the routine cleaning, sanitizing, and upkeep of University facilities to ensure a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position supports the operational goals of Facilities Management by maintaining assigned buildings and responding to departmental needs in accordance with University policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Perform routine cleaning of academic buildings, residence halls, offices, restrooms, and common areas
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and maintain floors using appropriate equipment and cleaning solutions
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms; replenish paper goods and soap dispensers
  • Remove trash and recycling; transport to designated disposal areas
  • Dust, wipe, and sanitize furniture, fixtures, and high-touch surfaces
  • Clean glass surfaces, mirrors, doors, and windows
  • Assist with event setup and breakdown, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment
  • Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and supply shortages promptly
  • Maintain custodial equipment in proper working condition
  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper chemical handling and PPE usage
  • Support summer turnover projects and special campus cleaning initiatives

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
  • Demonstrate professionalism and respectful communication in a campus environment
  • Comply with OSHA standards and University safety guidelines

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to perform physical labor and custodial tasks
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous custodial or housekeeping experience

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to operate standard custodial equipment
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and varying indoor/outdoor temperatures
