Job Summary: CLP is seeking part-time Custodians to perform a variety of routine custodial duties normally performed at a large public facility including trash removal; cleaning of public areas such as hallways, offices, meeting rooms and restrooms; set up and removal of tables and chairs for special events; trash removal and general grounds keeping.
This specific position has additional primary responsibilities of being a designated Rover. The Custodian-Rover will make regular deliveries between Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh locations as directed, along with the performance of regular Custodial duties. The Custodian-Rover must be able to independently drive to all needed sites regularly on a daily basis, and during all seasons and conditions. The Custodian-Rover must have and maintain a valid license, clear PA drivers license and will be subject to regular drug testing and drivers license record reviews.

Work Hours: 20 hours per week; days, evenings, and weekends required
Compensation: $19.65 per hour

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.;
  • Valid PA Drivers License with clear motor vehicle record;
  • Minimum six months of related custodial experience;
  • Or equivalent combination of technical training, education, and/or experience.
Essential Functions:
  • Driving CLP van or other vehicle regularly to all CLP sites as directed; maintaining adherence to all traffic laws and safe driving principles;
  • Exercises judgment and efficiency in the use of equipment and assures the acceptable appearance of all areas cleaned;
  • Cooperates as a member of the front-line team to provide seamless customer service;
  • Maintains inventory for cleaning supplies and equipment;
  • Sweeps, scrubs, mops, waxes and polishes floors; vacuums and shampoos rugs, washes and cleans light fixtures, baseboard, windows, doorframes and dusts surfaces;
  • Scours and polishes sinks, mirrors, toilet bowls and similar equipment in restroom, fills dispensing machines;
  • Gathers and removes trash and garbage from containers;
  • Cleans glass inside and out, stainless steel, railings and brass fixtures;
  • May perform light landscaping; cutting grass and shrubbery, removing debris, mulching and weeding, cleaning sidewalks and snow removal;
  • Changes lights as assigned utilizing ladders and vertical mechanical lifts;
  • Maintains and operates tools, equipment (including vehicles), materials, and machines in a safe, sound condition and maintains a safe, orderly and clean work area;
  • Provides support for special events;
  • Sets up or moves tables, chairs and boxes as instructed;
  • Assists with unloading of trucks, moving boxes and equipment and erecting scaffolding;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Good verbal communication skills, via radio and phone, for interactions with co-workers, staff, managers and the public;
  • Ability to follow directions and apply comprehension to complete work orders and other requests;
  • Ability to understand and achieve a basic working knowledge of the use of custodial equipment;
  • Ability to learn to use new technologies, equipment and tools as they become available;
  • Customer service skills; ability to demonstrate respect and dignity to co-workers and customers in both words and actions;
  • Ability to complete work orders in a timely and proper manner, including preventative maintenance.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work requires the ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods of time. Ability to lift, carry up 50+ pounds; stand, bend stoop, stretch, climb ladders, kneel and walk; Ability to push and/or pull up to 100lbs.
Work also requires the proper and safe handling of common cleaning products, indoor and outdoor motorized equipment such as vacuum, floor buffers, snow blower, shrub trimmers, etc., and non-motorized equipment such as brooms, mops, snow shovels, etc. Work can be located in areas that contain dirt and dust, along with other irritants.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which require safety precautions typical of large public facilities such as hallways, restrooms, display space, offices and meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices and/or avoidance of trips and falls.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
The following items are required to be completed post offer, but pre-employment
  • Pre-Employment Physical, including Drug Screen for Drivers
  • Motor Vehicle Record / Drivers License Check - annually
