Dairy Milker (ANML TCHN SR)

Under general supervision of the Animal Resource Manager, responsible for following milking protocols for the milk dairy herd. Collect milk samples for research and teaching programs; identify and segregate milk unsuitable for sale; and manage cattle.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • High School Diploma
  • Previous experience in an animal facility understanding milking protocol and physiology of lactating cattle.
  • Skills to handle animals in a safe manner for the employee and humane for the animal, and knowledge of general care of animals.
  • Ability and willingness to learn milking protocol and dairy operations
  • Interpersonal skills to facilitate training and supervision of students and interaction with the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of State, University, Department and Federal requirements for housing and care of animals.
  • Knowledge of proper milking procedures, facility milking protocol and physiology of lactating cattle. Knowledge of the state of California regulations for a grade A dairy, proper operation of milking equipment, and techniques to clean and sanitize milking equipment.
  • Knowledge of estrus cycles and mating behavior, general illnesses in cattle, and signs of parturition.Knowledge of the symptoms of mastitis.
  • Skills to accurately identify animals that need milk segregated, to detect milk that is abnormal, and to take milk samples.

The Department of Animal Science is a premier department using discipline-based expertise for interdisciplinary study of relevant animal agriculture and animal biology issues.

Department Specific Job Scope

Clean and perform routine maintenance of milking equipment, milk barn and milking house. Observe and report on animal health and reproductive cycles, and administer prescribed treatments. Assist in teaching students, other labs, visitors and others about milking. Assist graduate students and faculty, and participate in educational activities at the facility.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
