Summary

The Underwriting Data Analyst plays a critical role in transforming pharmacy and medical claims data into clear, accurate, and actionable insights that directly support underwriting decisions and client-specific evaluations. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex datasets to help internal partners understand trends, cost drivers, and financial impacts. The analyst collaborates closely with underwriting, analytics, and client-facing teams to ensure high-quality deliverables that inform pricing strategies and business recommendations.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Execute client-specific data analyses that support pharmacy underwriting and financial evaluations.
  • Conduct detailed assessments of pharmacy claims, cost trends, utilization patterns, and plan performance metrics.
  • Deliver accurate and timely analytics projects, ensuring all outputs meet established quality standards.
  • Serve as a subject matter contributor for pharmacy data questions and analytical requests from internal stakeholders.
  • Develop models, reports, and datasets that quantify financial risk, forecast costs, and support underwriting decisions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between underwriting assumptions and analytical findings.
  • Validate data integrity and troubleshoot discrepancies across multiple data sources.
  • Identify key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to pharmacy cost drivers and trend analysis.
  • Prepare clear summaries, exhibits, and visualizations that translate analytical results into understandable business insights.
  • Recommend enhancements to existing analytics processes, tools, and workflows to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support ongoing improvements in data governance, documentation, and analytical consistency.
  • Ensure proper version control and organization of deliverables and analytical artifacts.
Requirements:

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Pharmacy Administration, Health Informatics, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in data analysis, financial analytics, actuarial support, pharmacy benefit analytics, or related quantitative roles
  • Experience delivering data-driven insights to internal partners or business stakeholders.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and SQL; experience with BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI is preferred
  • Familiarity with pharmacy claims data, PBM pricing, underwriting concepts, or healthcare analytics is a plus.
  • Experience with statistical or data modeling tools (Python, R, SAS) is advantageous.

Physical Requirements

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some standing, walking, bending, and reaching may be required. Regularly operates in an office or home office setting which involves utilizing a computer, mouse, keyboard, and occasionally operates other standard office equipment, such as printer, copier, phone. Travel may be required by either car or airplane, or a combination of multiple modes of transportation.
