Data Engineer

Job Summary

We are seeking a Data Engineer contractor to support the design, development, and maintenance of a modern data platform within a capital project and program management environment. This role focuses on building reliable data pipelines and transforming both structured and unstructured data into usable, analytics-ready formats that support reporting and business decision-making.

The organization is currently modernizing a highly fragmented data environment, where data exists across multiple systems and repositories including project management tools, financial systems, schedules, and document storage platforms. This role will play a key part in bringing that data together into a unified and scalable architecture.

The Data Engineer will work closely with the Data Architect and business stakeholders to implement data pipelines, develop transformations, and support the creation of a single source of truth for capital project data.

Key Responsibilities

• Build, test, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines across multiple data sources including project management systems, financial platforms, and document repositories
• Ingest and transform structured (project, financial, scheduling) and unstructured (documents, reports, logs) data into a unified data environment
• Develop and maintain data transformations across Medallion Architecture layers (Bronze, Silver, Gold)
• Implement data quality checks, monitoring, and troubleshooting processes to ensure pipeline reliability
• Optimize data pipelines for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency
• Support the development of semantic data models for reporting and analytics
• Partner with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs and translate them into data requirements
• Assist in defining and automating KPIs that track project performance and operational metrics
• Support BI and reporting efforts, including enabling dashboards and analytics tools
• Document data definitions, transformations, and processes to ensure consistency and usability
• Collaborate with the Data Architect to align pipeline development with overall architecture and standards

Required Qualifications

• Hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines using ETL/ELT frameworks
• Strong proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language such as Python
• Experience working with cloud-based data platforms (Azure or similar)
• Understanding of data warehousing, data lakes, and modern data architecture concepts
• Experience working with both structured and unstructured data sources
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work cross-functionally and translate business needs into technical solutions
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience with Microsoft data technologies such as Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, or Azure Data Lake
• Familiarity with Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold)
• Experience supporting BI tools such as Power BI or similar platforms
• Experience working in construction, engineering, or other project-based industries
• Familiarity with systems such as ERP platforms or project management tools
• Experience working with unstructured data and document-based data sources
• Exposure to AI-driven data processing or automation techniques
• Experience working in environments with limited or outsourced IT infrastructure
