As a Data Science Intern within Valmont’s Agriculture Division Software Engineering Department, you’ll play an important role in advancing data-driven decision-making and irrigation optimization. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with cloud-based data systems, developing predictive models, and collaborating with engineering and product teams to deliver impactful data insights.
Valmont’s internship program provides a hands-on learning experience through project work, leadership development, job shadowing, and interaction with senior leaders across the company.
What You’ll Do
Extract, clean, and preprocess data from Azure-based databases
Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities
Engineer features for predictive modeling and decision-making
Develop and evaluate machine learning models to support irrigation optimization
Document methodologies, findings, and present insights to key stakeholders
Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate data solutions
Identify data quality issues and propose process improvements
What We’re Looking For
Junior, Senior, or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field
Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation
Strong programming skills in Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib/Seaborn)
Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure
Strong experience in data cleaning, feature engineering, and model development, with the ability to interpret data, solve problems analytically, and translate findings into actionable insights
Experience working with time-series or sensor data, particularly in agriculture or environmental contexts, is preferred
Familiarity with geospatial analysis tools such as GeoPandas or QGIS is preferred
Understanding of precision agriculture, irrigation systems, or agronomy preferred
Exposure to MLOps practices and deploying machine learning models in production environments is preferred
Experience with dashboarding and data visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Plotly Dash preferred
Ability to work in the office 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
