A data modeler's duties span the entire data lifecycle, from initial requirements gathering to ongoing maintenance and optimization.
- Design and Development: Design, develop, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support various business applications and analytical needs. This involves creating blueprints (often using Entity-Relationship Diagrams) that illustrate data elements and their relationships.
- Requirements Analysis: Collaborate with stakeholders, including business analysts, data architects, and end-users, to understand data requirements and translate them into effective data modeling solutions.
- Data Integrity and Quality: Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of data models, implementing data quality checks and governance standards to maintain reliable data.
- Performance Optimization: Optimize existing data models and database structures for speed, efficiency, and scalability, especially when handling large volumes of data.
- Documentation and Communication: Create and maintain detailed documentation, including data dictionaries, data flow diagrams, and technical specifications, to ensure understanding and compliance across the organization.
- Collaboration and Support: Work closely with data engineers on ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and data integration, and provide expertise to development teams and database administrators.
