About the Role
This role leads the data science function within a shared services setup, owning analytics and ML initiatives from problem definition through deployment. Based in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll partner closely with business leaders to translate data into measurable business outcomes.

Our client is a large retail organisation with established operations across Southeast Asia, supporting multiple business units through shared services. They are actively investing in data, automation, and advanced analytics to improve decision-making, efficiency, and long-term scalability.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Data Scientists and Analysts, building strong in-house capability
- Set the data science roadmap and prioritise initiatives based on business impact and value
- Own the end-to-end machine learning lifecycle, including model development, deployment, and monitoring
- Translate complex business problems into clear analytics and ML requirements
- Oversee scalable data pipelines, ETL processes, and feature engineering approaches
- Ensure data quality, governance, and responsible use of analytics and ML models
- Partner with business stakeholders to define KPIs and measure success
- Present insights, model performance, and recommendations to non-technical audiences
- Identify opportunities for automation, optimisation, and cost savings through analytics
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field; Master’s degree preferred
- 7+ years of experience in data science or AI/ML , with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Proven track record delivering machine learning solutions with measurable business impact
- Strong grounding in statistics, predictive modelling, and machine learning techniques
- Hands-on experience with Python or R, and strong SQL capability
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern data architectures
- Experience working with business stakeholders and influencing decision-makers
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics clearly
