Position:
Data Scientist – Office of Strategy Management and Institutional Effectiveness
Job Purpose:
The Data Scientist is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing data-driven solutions that leverage business intelligence, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The primary purpose is to discover information hidden in vast amounts of University data to support research, deliver a better student experience, and enable smarter, data-informed decisions across the institution.
Core Responsibilities:
Predictive Modeling and ML:

Develop, implement, and optimize predictive models and machine learning algorithms, e.g. k-NN, SVM, to solve problems and generate strategic value for the University
Data Analysis and Insights:
-
Conduct advanced data mining and analyze data from various sources, including third-party extensions, to uncover actionable trends, patterns, and insights supporting business and research goals
Data Architecture and Engineering:
-
Design and maintain robust data architecture, such as data warehousing, modeling, and ETL/ELT, and enhance the scalability and performance of existing data systems
Data Quality and Governance:

Collaborate with data professionals to ensure data quality, integrity, and proper flow

Establish and enforce data collection techniques and metadata standards
Security and Compliance:

Develop and implement data security and restoration policies, procedures, and controls

Ensure all data practices comply with established governance and ethics principles
Technical and Toolkit Expertise:

Utilize advanced proficiency in query languages, i.e. SQL, scripting or programming, and common data science toolkits, e.g. R, Weka and MatLab, for analysis and feature selection
Communication and Visualization:
-
Clearly communicate complex data findings and recommendations to senior staff, faculty, and external partners using clear and concise visualizations, e.g. PowerBi and Tableau
General Administrative Support:

Perform other related duties as requested
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
-
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a relevant field

Minimum 10 years of professional experience, including at least two years in a related data science field

Data-oriented personality with a strong analytical mindset and problem-solving skills

Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Technical Expertise:

Excellent understanding of Machine Learning techniques and algorithms

Proficiency in SQL, scripting, and data visualization tools such as PowerBi and Tableau)

Experience with big data platforms such as Hadoop and Spark is a plus
