A Database Support Engineer (24x7) maintains, troubleshoots, and optimizes database systems to ensure uninterrupted service around the clock, including incident resolution, system monitoring, backup, security, and performance tuning.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 24x7 operational support for critical database infrastructure, ensuring uptime and rapid incident response.
- Manage database lifecycle activities including deployment, patching, upgrades, backup/recovery, and decommissioning using automation tools.
- Troubleshoot technical issues, implement solutions, and ensure incidents are resolved promptly to maintain service levels.
- Monitor performance, capacity, and system health; report on problems and implement improvements to avoid recurrence.
- Enhance security by performing compliance reviews, implementing controls, and ensuring data protection.
- Assist application development teams with database-related queries and support.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or relevant certifications such as OCP, ICCP CDMP, MSSDC).
- Minimum of 2-5 years’ hands-on experience with database administration (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or NoSQL systems).
- Proficiency in automation/scripting (e.g., Python, Shell), troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Ability to work independently in shifting schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as part of a continuous support rotation.
- Strong communication skills, customer centricity, and a track record of managing escalations in high-pressure environments.
Typical Duties in 24x7 Environment
- Monitoring database alerts, logs, and metrics in real-time to proactively address potential outages.
- Maintaining documentation for incidents, support actions, and solutions.
- Liaising with other IT teams to coordinate database changes, ensure smooth deployments, and support business operations.
- Participating in RCA (Root Cause Analysis) and improvement initiatives for incident reduction.
Skills and Certifications
- Deep understanding of relational and/or NoSQL database concepts.
- Experience with industry tools (SQL Admin Studio, BI, SSRS, Tableau, etc.) and cloud database platforms as required.
- Certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft SQL Server certifications, or cloud vendor credentials are highly valued.
