General Function
Under guidance of the Youth & Family Director and support of the Senior Behavior & Mental Health Director, the Day Camp Behavior Specialist is responsible for counseling students with personal, behavioral, and psychological issues, and addressing relevant issues during camp. They will work with students one-on-one and during camp sessions. The Day Camp Behavior Specialist will also provide appropriate resources and strategies to parents and camp counselors to assist campers who are experiencing behavioral or psychological issues. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Observe children who are currently struggling and model positive behavioral intervention strategies for counselors to use with the child.
  • Counsel campers with personal and psychological issues that affect their performance, behavior, and socialization in Day Camp.
  • Communicate with parents and schedule meetings to provide resources with kids having consistent issues.
  • Document interactions with campers appropriately. Use documents such as FYI forms, Incident Reports, and Behavior plans with campers, staff, and parents. Provide the information for the plan, the support for the plan, and the resources for the plan.
  • Maintain case files and reports to track progress and problems.
  • Support staff daily through behavior management, parent communication, staff communication, program implementation, crisis intervention, and more.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and provide the group with a professional development tools each week to help guide them throughout their summer successfully.
  • Assist camp staff with any questions or concerns regarding their campers, staff, etc.
  • Meet weekly with Director to discuss any concerns and provide the appropriate support.
  • Facilitate Social Emotional Learning activities and coach staff in SEL implementation
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
  • A bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or other related field nearing completion.
  • Experience in School Social Work may be advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassion and empathy for children.
  • Professionalism and discretion.
  • Good relationships with relevant social services.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
