DENTAL ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR

SUMMARY

Job Summary
The Dental Assisting Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction that prepares students for entry-level employment in the dental assisting profession. This position supports student success through effective teaching, mentoring, assessment, curriculum development, and collaboration with faculty, staff, and industry partners. The instructor assists the Program Director in maintaining program accreditation, ensuring compliance with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards, and supporting College and program-wide objectives.

This is a full time 214/7 non-tenure track faculty position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & OTHER DUTIES

Essential Duties Instruction & Curriculum Delivery


  • Deliver effective classroom lectures, laboratory instruction, and coursework using appropriate instructional methods, materials, and media to prepare students with entry-level professional skills.
  • Provide individualized instruction to support diverse learning needs.
  • Plan and develop meaningful learning experiences aligned with current industry standards and practices.
  • Ensure instructional design and delivery support the mission, philosophy, and objectives of the program and the College.
  • Coordinate instruction with other program faculty to ensure consistency with approved performance objectives, current industry standards, and CODA requirements.
  • Update and maintain course curriculum, including performance objectives, competencies, lesson plans, and instructional content in accordance with College and accreditation standards.
  • Require and support student use of library and online learning resources.
Student Support & Classroom Management
  • Mentor, advise, and guide students toward successful completion of program requirements, coursework, professional behaviors, and career goals.
  • Manage the classroom to maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
  • Respond appropriately to student concerns, conduct issues, and academic challenges in accordance with College policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate ongoing student input for instructional and program improvement.
Assessment & Documentation
  • Evaluate and document student achievement, attendance, progress, and workplace behaviors at least quarterly and in accordance with College policy.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic records and respond to information requests in a timely manner.
  • Assist with collecting, analyzing, and applying student learning outcomes data to improve instruction and curriculum.
Safety, Equipment & Resources
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, infection control standards, and proper use of equipment at all times.
  • Ensure students are knowledgeable of safety practices and that all instructional equipment is maintained in safe working condition.
  • Requisition, safeguard, and maintain inventories of program equipment and supplies.
Program Development, Accreditation & Industry Relations
  • Assist in maintaining program accreditation and compliance with CODA, state, federal, and College requirements.
  • Support preparation of accreditation reports, self-studies, and required documentation.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with industry partners and advisory committee members.
  • Support student preparation for industry credentials, certifications, and licensure opportunities.
  • Participate in College-wide accreditation, assessment, and compliance activities.
Student Recruitment, Retention & Job Placement
  • Support College initiatives focused on student retention, completion, and progression.
  • Participate in student recruitment activities and outreach.
  • Collaborate with Student Services and advisory committees to support student employment opportunities and maintain job placement records.
Program Administration & Collaboration
  • Assist the Program Director in planning, organizing, and coordinating program operations and policies.
  • Support program budgeting, monitoring expenditures, and maintaining equipment and inventory records.
  • Assist with program review, data collection, goal setting, and preparation of annual and self-study reports.
  • Support advisory committee operations and maintain current program information, including promotional materials and the program webpage.
  • Enforce College policies, procedures, and operating standards in a fair and consistent manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications


  • Completion of a CODA Accredited Dental Assisting Program
  • Current Dental Assisting National Board Certification
  • Registered Dental Assistant-Washington State
  • Bachelor’s degree in progress to be completed within 3 years of hire
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Dental Assistant
  • Must communicate in English both verbally and in writing
Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by the Human Resources Office for comparability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Seven (7) years experience as Dental Assistant
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with Canvas, Microsoft Word, Power Point, and dental computer software programs

Retirement Plans
Faculty and Exempt Positions
Faculty have to choose between either the State Board Retirement Plan (SBRP), also known as TIAA or Plan 3 of the Teachers Retirement System (TRS). to compare the two plans.

Exempt have to choose between either the SBRP or Plan 3 of the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). to compare the two plans.

SBRP (TIAA) is a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
  • Employee Contribution: Under 35: 5% of gross salary; 35-49: 7.5% of gross salary; 50 & over: 10% of gross salary
  • Employer Contribution: Under 35: 5% of gross salary; 35-49: 7.5% of gross salary; 50 & over: 10% of gross salary

TRS Plan 3 is a defined benefit and a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
  • Employee Contribution: Varies from 5% to 15%
  • Employer Contribution: 9.53 of gross salary

PERS Plan 3 is a defined benefit and a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
  • Employee Contribution: Varies from 5% to 15%
  • Employer Contribution: 9.03% of gross salary

Classified Positions
Classified employees have to choose between either the Plan 2 or Plan 3 of the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). to compare the two plans.

PERS Plan 2 is a defined benefits plan with the following contribution rates:
  • Employee Contribution: 6.36% of gross salary
  • Employer Contribution: 9.53% of gross salary
PERS Plan 3 is a defined benefit and a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
  • Employee Contribution: Varies from 5% to 15%
  • Employer Contribution: 9.53% of gross salary

Employee and employer contributions to applicable retirement plans are mandatory. The amount of the deduction and contribution are dependent upon the retirement plan chosen and may vary by current contribution rates in effect.

Term Life Insurance
Bates provides $35,000 basic life insurance for death from any cause and $5,000 basic accidental death and dismemberment at no cost to the employee. Employees can enroll in additional low cost life insurance for themselves and dependents.

Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD)
Bates provides a basic LTD insurance plan at no cost to employees. The basic plan pays a maximum of
$240 per month after 90 days of total disability. The optional LTD plan pays 60% of the first $10,000 of monthly salary, reduced by any deductible income such as social security or retirement benefits.
Employee cost is dependent upon benefit waiting period chosen.

Leaves and Holidays
Vacation
Eligible exempt and classified employees accrue annual leave at rates determined by their employee status, ranging from 7 to 16 hours per month when eligible.

Sick Leave
Eligible classified, faculty, and exempt staff accrue sick leave monthly. Employees represented by a bargaining unit should refer to their negotiated agreement for sick leave rules and accrual rates.

Holidays
Bates observes the following holidays/non-work days:
