The San Francisco City Attorney’s Office is looking for a qualified and motivated litigator to join its Tax Team.

About the Position
Litigators on the Tax Team work primarily on defending the City in tax refund lawsuits. Cases may involve a wide range of local taxes, with amounts in dispute ranging from the tens of thousands to hundreds of millions of dollars. Issues litigated in these cases include federal and state constitutional doctrines (e.g., Commerce Clause, state preemption of city taxing power); valuation of taxable and nontaxable property; interpreting federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and the application of the City’s taxes to the diverse and emerging industries comprising San Francisco’s business community. While experience with state or local tax matters is helpful, it is not required. Litigators on the Tax Team benefit from the subject matter expertise of the Team’s advice attorneys and collaborate with each other as well as with auditors and appraisers in the Office of the Treasurer and Tax Collector and the Office of the Assessor-Recorder.

Selection Procedures
The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in the oral/performance interview.
Salary and Benefits
The Deputy City Attorney position has a 16-step salary scale ranging from $153,140 to $268,320. The successful applicant is appointed to a salary step based on years of experience as a lawyer.
