About the Position





The City of Saint Paul is seeking a Deputy Director of Communications; responsible for identifying, generating, coordinating, and supporting communications efforts for the Mayor’s Office in support of the Mayor’s agenda. This position will report to the Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications.

Here’s what you can expect to do:

  • Draft communications materials for use across multiple channels, including weekly newsletters, social media, talking points, and other communications content in alignment with the Mayor’s agenda.
  • Develop attention-grabbing social media content that chronicles the Mayor’s day-to-day activities and keeps the people of Saint Paul in the know.
  • Maintain an editorial calendar aligned with the Mayor’s staff and the City's public information officers.
  • Support the Executive Director by staffing media conferences, interviews, and events, including official city functions.
  • Assist in the planning for the annual State of Our City Address, Budget Address, and other official events.
  • Assist in coordinating between the city and district councils to distribute information and foster relationships between state, local, and community partners in alignment with the Mayor’s agenda.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Robust understanding of social media platforms and how to tailor messages to each.
  • Effectively communicates across race, class, and culture, and other aspects of difference.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills and ability to communicate complex information clearly to a range of audiences.
  • Strong political instincts and an ability to discern political sensitivities.
  • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, attentive to details, and responsive to deadlines.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with strong interpersonal skills in a fast-paced, team environment.
