Deputy Fire Chief

The City of Williamsburg is looking for its next Deputy Fire Chief of the Williamsburg Fire Department. The City of Williamsburg offers an exceptional opportunity for a fire service professional who is ready to embrace the challenges and rewards of the position. This position is responsible for assisting the Fire Chief in the planning, direction, and implementation of policies, operating procedures, and guidelines for Fire Suppression, Community Risk Reduction, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Emergency Management. Assists in the identification and development of priorities, goals and objectives for the department and the community; and requires the ability to provide innovative and creative approaches and methodologies to address unique, complex challenges. May be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings. Subject to mandatory call back at any time and assumes responsibility for the department in the absence of the Fire Chief. Serves as the Deputy Coordinator for Emergency Management. The ability to communicate, written and verbally, is critical to the job performance of this position.

Education and Experience:

• Associate degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university and must be able to obtain a bachelor’s degree within two (2) years of promotion to Deputy Fire Chief; and
• Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience to include three years (3) supervisory and management experience as a Chief Officer; or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

• Valid Virginia driver’s license
• Acceptable criminal background check and drug screen results
• EMT Certification
• ICS 100,200,300,400,700,800
• Must establish residency within an acceptable distance of the City of Williamsburg limits within a timeframe agreed upon with the Fire Chief.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree
• Virginia Certified Paramedic
• National Fire Academy (NFA) Executive Fire Officer Designation
