General Definition of Work
The Deputy Sheriff performs intermediate protective services with frequent exposure to high-risk situations. This position will exercise independent judgement in patrolling roadways and cities within the jurisdiction, enforce statutes and ordinances, make critical decisions, conduct general patrol, respond to emergency calls, monitor traffic, conduct investigations, prepare reports, develop community partnerships, and carry out special duties while using a significant degree of independent judgement and decision-making under the limited supervision of the Captain, Chief Deputy Sheriff and County Sheriff. Performs related work as apparent or assigned.

Essential Functions
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department; thorough knowledge of modern police and investigation methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of police investigative techniques of identification; thorough knowledge of emergency response and conflict resolution; thorough knowledge of the geography of the community and the location of important buildings; comprehensive skill using firearms and the operation of an automobile; thorough skill creating and keeping accurate records and reports of services provided; thorough skill using standard BCA website and software systems; records management software, thorough skill using standard database and records management systems; thorough skill using complex audiovisual surveillance equipment; thorough skill using standard tools of the trade; thorough skill operating standard office equipment, investigative equipment and applicable hardware and software; thorough skill recommending or giving immediate or emergency first aid; thorough knowledge of police computer systems; ability to create clear and concise reports; ability to conduct an investigation in a professional and efficient manner; ability to establish effective trust between county officials, the general public and case parties; ability to obtain financial or other records from external agencies including those not affiliated with law enforcement; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external law enforcement staff and agencies, county associates and the general public.
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications: Enrolled in or completed an associates/technical degree program in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field. Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a peace officer in the state of MN at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.

Salary range is $33.36 to $47.14 per hour.
