Dermatology Nurse

Key Responsibilities of a Derma Nurse.

Patient Assessment

  • Take medical histories with a focus on dermatologic issues.
  • Conduct physical examinations of skin, scalp, nails, etc.
  • Identify rashes, lesions, infections, wounds, or suspicious moles.

2. Assisting with Procedures

  • Assist dermatologists with:
  • Biopsies
  • Excisions
  • Cryotherapy
  • Laser treatments
  • Mohs surgery
  • Cosmetic procedures (e.g., Botox, fillers, peels)

3. Wound and Skin Care

  • Clean, dress, and monitor wounds or post-op sites.
  • Administer topical or systemic medications.
  • Provide care for burns, ulcers, and other skin injuries.

4. Education and Counseling

  • Educate patients on:
  • Skin cancer prevention (e.g., sun safety)
  • Post-procedure skincare
  • Acne or eczema management
  • Medication use (e.g., isotretinoin, steroids)
  • Promote skin hygiene and health.

5. Cosmetic Dermatology Support (if in aesthetics)

  • Perform or assist in procedures like:
  • Chemical peels
  • Microneedling
  • Laser hair removal
  • PRP therapy (platelet-rich plasma)
  • Monitor patient response and outcomes.

6. Documentation and Records

  • Maintain accurate patient records.
  • Chart procedures, medications, and follow-ups.
  • Track progress of skin conditions or treatments.

7. Patient Monitoring

  • Observe for adverse reactions to treatments.
  • Monitor for signs of infection or complications.
  • Track chronic skin conditions like psoriasis or dermatitis.
