Design Director (Licensed Architect) - Residential Remodeling

ROLE

We are looking for a Director of Design & Architecture (Licensed Architect) to join the GreatHouse family. This is a senior leadership role responsible for leading our entire preconstruction team, including interior design, drafting, estimating, and procurement, while also serving as the architectural lead on select high-impact projects. This person will sit on the leadership team, helping shape the strategic direction of the company, while ensuring that day-to-day, our preconstruction process delivers exceptional design, clear communication, and predictable outcomes for our clients. This role is ideal for a licensed architect who thrives in both leadership and hands-on design, and who is excited about the opportunity to influence not just projects—but people, processes, and the future of a growing design-build company.

This is not a traditional architecture role. This is an opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary team, shape the future of a growing company, work in a collaborative design-build environment, and have a direct impact on both client experience and company success.

We expect this role to balance:

- ~50% leadership, team management, and process ownership

- ~50% project design (3–4 large projects per year)

Salary/Benefits

- Competitive base salary plus quarterly profit sharing for a total compensation target of $100-115K per year, based on experience

Responsibilities

As Director of Design & Architecture (Leadership):

- Lead and manage the full preconstruction team, including designers, drafters, estimators, and procurement

- Own the master schedule through preconstruction, coordinating with production to ensure timely delivery of projects for production

- Establish and continuously improve preconstruction processes

- Ensure all projects meet standards for design excellence, constructability, budget alignment, and client experience

- Provide creative and technical oversight across all projects

- Develop team members through coaching, training, and mentorship

- Collaborate with leadership team on company strategy and growth initiatives

- Help define and elevate the design vision and brand

- Improve systems, tools, vendors, and workflows

As a Licensed Architect (Project Leadership):

- Serve as the lead architect on 3–4 large residential projects per year

- Own the client relationship during preconstruction

- Lead architectural and interior design from concept through documentation

WHO YOU ARE:

You are a licensed architect and natural leader who enjoys building teams, improving systems, and delivering exceptional design experiences.

Qualifications

- Licensed Architect (required)

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture

- 10+ years of experience with CAD-based design software (Chief Architect is a huge plus)

- 8+ years of experience in residential or commercial multi-family architecture or design-build

- Proven leadership experience managing and growing a diverse team

- Experience with large residential remodels ($1-2M+)

- Strong understanding of structural design and constructability

- Excellent communication and organizational skills

Pay: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
