The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 3 to be responsible for Design Documentation compliance in the Eastern Region Development Branch for WSDOT projects. The primary duties of the position include reviewing and ensuring that designs are complete, accurate, internally consistent, properly documented, and in conformance with WSDOT policies. This position is considered one of the Region Subject Matter Experts for the Design Manual and provides guidance to project offices on preparation of Design Documentation. This position works with a secondary Design Documentation Engineer who will be responsible for Design Documentation compliance for Local Programs, Developer, and Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) projects affecting highways within the Eastern Region.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Documentation Engineer will:

Review project designs and design documentation for all stages of the design process – kickoff meeting through advertisement; design work includes review of Region, local agency and developer project designs and documentation

Recommend approval of, or changes to, design and design documentation; track design status of projects and participate in Plans, Specifications, and Estimate (PS&E) status meetings.

Understand the Plans/Design Manager’s duties and perform duties in absence and as assigned during peak workloads.

Complete initial contact for design questions from Project Engineer Office; not limited to ADA, maximum extent feasible submittals, and guardrail/barrier options.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

Design Documentation Expertise: Demonstrated ability to review, interpret, and ensure design documentation complies with WSDOT policies, manuals, and engineering standards throughout all stages of the project lifecycle.

Engineering Principles & Technical Knowledge: Proficient in applying civil engineering principles to design, plan, and review transportation infrastructure projects.

Leadership and Staff Supervision: Ability to lead, supervise, and mentor technical staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement: Skilled in communicating complex engineering concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders, both written and verbally.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Transportation Engineering & Project Leadership: Demonstrated ability to apply professional transportation engineering knowledge and experience in design, PS&E development, and documentation, supported by a 2- or 4-year engineering-related degree, while providing effective leadership and supervision to technical staff.
