In accordance with the Agreement between Teamsters, and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.


Position Summary:



Police Detectives are plainclothes investigators responsible for conducting thorough and objective investigations into crimes and violations of state and federal laws. This includes gathering and analyzing evidence, conducting interviews with complainants, witnesses, and suspects, reviewing records, and monitoring suspect activity. Detectives are responsible for preparing detailed reports and completing all necessary documentation for judicial proceedings, including arrest and search warrants.



This position requires strong investigative skills, sound judgment, and the ability to clearly articulate findings in both written reports and courtroom testimony. Detectives must work collaboratively with internal and external partners while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.



In addition to investigative responsibilities, Detectives may be required to perform uniformed duties as needed to support District operations, including school and community events, safety initiatives, and other assignments as directed.



Minimum Qualifications:


Must possess great communication skills and be tactful when dealing with others

Must be self-motivated and accountable¿

Must be computer proficient (Microsoft office suite, TLO, TALON, etc.)

Must be MCOLE's Certified

  • Must be able to interpret and apply complex laws and testify in a Court of Law

Must be available to be On Call at least once or twice a month

Must be able to work alone or in a group at times with minimal supervision


Must be able to effectively plan and organize workload, and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines

Must be able to tag evidence and other property properly

Must be able to provide all details of assigned Investigations to Supervisor

Must record and maintain all files for various suspects and provide an update to supervisors in a timely manner

Maintain communication with the victim(s) and keep current file with address, phone, and place of employment

Must be able to analyze and maintain a record of all evidence and maintain files on all investigations to be presented in court

Essential Functions:


Coordinate and manage assigned investigations by planning activities, organizing workload, and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines

  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive case files; prepare detailed reports and investigative correspondence in a timely manner.

  • Ensure all investigative work is thorough, accurate, and submitted promptly.

  • Testify in court and present investigative findings clearly and professionally.

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with supervisors, colleagues, victims, and external partner.

  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and the Prosecutor's Office to support case development and prosecution.

  • Conduct investigations involving crimes against persons and property, including but not limited to assaults, sex crimes, burglary, threats, and homicide, and make arrests when necessary.

Apply knowledge of relevant laws, departmental policies, and law enforcement practices within the district.

  • Effectively interact with and manage cases involving both juvenile and adult offenders.

  • Adhere to DPSPD policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and directives.

  • Demonstrate and uphold DPSCD Core Values in all duties and interactions.

  • Utilize and continue to develop effective interview and investigative techniques.

  • Maintain professionalism, sound judgment, and confidentiality in all aspects of the role.

  • Perform uniformed duties as needed to support District operations, including school-based and community events, safety initiatives, and other assignments as directed.

Security Clearance

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at the point of hiring.
