Job Title: Detention Officer

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the class is to oversee jail inmates within the detention facility. The Detention Officer is responsible for security, inmate health and welfare to include: medical, mental health, family problems, feeding, religious needs, legal rights, housekeeping, laundry and hygiene. The Detention Officer works according to procedures but decides how and when to perform tasks under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform two (2) inmate checks per hour on an irregular basis, unless otherwise noted (i.e. medical, suicide or special observations).
  • Processing inmates into and out of the detention facility.
  • Searching inmates and the facility as required.
  • Explaining procedures and determining any personal issues.
  • Performs security checks to ensure inmates and facilities are secure.
  • Monitor court appearance schedules and ensure inmates are ready; transport inmates as required.
  • Makes inmates available for legal consultation with attorneys.
  • Perform housekeeping chores such as laundry and cleaning.
  • Ensures inmates receive meals, mail, medications, and medical attention if required.
  • Gathers and maintains information to support periodic and special reports documenting detention facility activities and events to include form preparation and log preparation.
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, copying, transcribing, entering, or posting data or information.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • One (1) year of directly related experience;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
  • Valid state driver’s license. Must have no more than three (3) points showing on current DMV records in order to operate county vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of county policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of computers and applicable software programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical and dexterity refers to the requirement for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Requires medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and involves exerting between twenty to fifty (20-50) pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and fifty to a hundred (50-100) pounds of force on an occasional basis.

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth and texture perception, and color perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Environmental hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, explosives, and violence.
