Development Data and Communications Coordinator

The Development Data and Communications Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the fundraising, alumni relations, and advancement efforts of Spartanburg Methodist College. This position is responsible for managing and maintaining the Development Office’s database, coordinating data integrity and reporting, and designing and executing communications and marketing plans for fundraising initiatives and special events. The Coordinator works collaboratively with the development team and campus partners while independently managing multiple projects and deadlines.

Major Areas of Responsibility:
Database Management & Reporting
  • Manage and maintain the department’s donor and alumni database (Raiser’s Edge), ensuring accuracy, consistency, and completeness of records.
  • Update constituent records including address changes, employment updates, contact reports, and deceased notifications.
  • Ensure alumni and graduate records are imported correctly and demographic data remains current.
  • Generate routine and ad hoc reports to support fundraising, alumni engagement, and administrative needs.
  • Assist in data cleanup projects and ensure best practices for data entry and stewardship.

Communications & Marketing:
  • Design and implement comprehensive marketing and communications plans for major fundraising efforts and institutional events.
  • Create and manage email campaigns, social media content, and print materials in coordination with Advancement and campus partners.
  • Ensure messaging is timely, accurate, and aligned with the College’s brand and fundraising goals.

Event Coordination & Fundraising Support:
  • Coordinate event communications including save-the-dates, invitations, RSVP tracking, and related materials.
  • After training, manage event-specific fundraising software, including:
  • Uploading and managing silent auction items
  • Overseeing ticket sales and sponsorships
  • Supporting live auction execution
  • Finalizing post-event receipting and donor acknowledgements
  • Provide administrative and logistical support before, during, and after fundraising events.

Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work effectively as part of a collaborative development team while managing independent responsibilities.
  • Communicate professionally with alumni, donors, vendors, faculty, staff, and community partners via phone, email, text, and in person.
  • Assist with additional advancement-related projects as assigned

Working Conditions:
This work is normally performed in an office environment and will require significant contact with faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and other community members. The work will include events on and off campus. Must be able to drive to off-site locations. Occasionally, this position may require overnight travel.


Physical Requirements:

  • Light physical exertion. Normally seated, standing, or walking at will. Periodic handling of parcels or supplies.
  • The incumbent may be required to lift materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to access office files.
  • Manual and physical dexterity and visual acuity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
  • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer monitor, in hand written form and printed on paper.
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

Education and Experience:

  • Development, recruiting or sales experience preferred
  • SMC alumnus a plus but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication required
