Job Summary:
The Director of Development serves as the chief architect and strategist behind the organization’s fundraising efforts. This role is responsible for creating and executing development plans that cultivate donor relationships, secure philanthropic support, and advance the mission of Humane Indiana. The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader, storyteller, and relationship-builder who thrives in a mission-driven environment.
Duties/Responsibilities:
· Lead, develop and implement current major gifts, annual funds, capital campaign and planned giving fundraising components to meet goals.
· Drive the creation of a comprehensive, multi-year plan for resource development which integrates fundraising approaches with well-targeted, engaging communication and marketing input.
· Manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects including individual, foundations, and corporations. Document activity with reports demonstrates quantifiable effort and outcomes.
· Identify and engage new individuals, foundations, and corporate perspective donors. Cultivate and solicit individually or with board members.
· Lead in the development and execution of donor constitutes strategies to promote involvement and enthusiasm about offering financial support to the Organization.
· Assist the Organization in working with the Board of Directors, ensuring a strong awareness of advancement priorities by sharing plans, documented progress and successes.
· Ensure donors are well stewarded by effective communicating the impact of giving and a compelling future vision for the Organization.
· Create consistent and appropriately targeted advancement messages about the Organization in collaboration with the Marketing Manager
· Provide metrics to document fundraising progress and assess efficacy.
· Works closely with the Director of Finance and the CEO to ensure fundraising policies, processes, and reporting aligned with required financial standards and best professional practices.
Qualifications/Experience
· The strongest candidates will have at least six or more years of broad nonprofit experience in fund development with a proven track record of fundraising success.
· Experience building on the strengths of existing programs while identifying opportunities for growth and expansion.
· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage favorably with diverse groups of donors and volunteers. Demonstrated success in asking people to contribute time and money is required.
· Proficient with development office functions including gift processing, database management and fundraising reporting.
· Demonstrates sound judgment, personal integrity, and a strong commitment to our mission-centered approach
· Ability to work in a collegial manner, contributing as a team member, and collaborating across the organization.
· Strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated in presentations, proposals, fundraising material, and individual correspondence/interaction.
· The drive to implement best practices and always incorporate the highest ethical standards including respect for donor privacy.
· Familiarity with fundraising databases- Virtuous preferred
· A bachelor’s degree is required for the position; advanced degree or certification such as CFRE is a plus.
