Job Summary

The Head of Subcontracts for Solar Projects is a key leadership role responsible for the strategy, execution, and management of all subcontracting activities for utility-scale and/or commercial solar projects. This individual ensures that all subcontracts are negotiated, awarded, and administered efficiently, adhering to legal, technical, and commercial requirements, and ultimately contributing to the timely and profitable execution of projects.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and implement the overall subcontracting strategy, policies, and procedures aligned with the company's project execution and risk management goals.
  • Collaborate with Project Management, Engineering, and Finance teams to define scope, budget, and schedule for all required subcontracted work (e.g., civil works, mechanical installation, electrical installation, testing, and commissioning).
  • Create standardized contract templates (e.g., FIDIC, bespoke EPC contracts) and ensure all terms and conditions minimize financial and legal exposure.

2. Sourcing & Tendering

  • Lead the entire sub-contract tendering process, including pre-qualification, preparation of Requests for Proposal (RFPs), bid solicitation, and conducting pre-bid meetings.
  • Perform detailed techno-commercial evaluations of proposals, challenging bidders on cost, schedule, and technical scope.
  • Conduct robust negotiations on price, terms, scope, and schedule with selected subcontractors to secure the best overall value for the company.
  • Finalize and issue all Subcontract Agreements and Purchase Orders for services.

3. Subcontract Management & Compliance

  • Oversee the entire lifecycle of subcontracts, from award through close-out.
  • Manage and approve all Subcontract Change Orders, claims, and disputes, ensuring rigorous documentation and negotiation to protect the company's financial position.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance in coordination with Site and Project Managers, focusing on safety, quality, schedule adherence, and cost control.
  • Ensure all contractual obligations, insurance, bond, and regulatory requirements are met by subcontractors.

4. Leadership & Mentorship

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Subcontracts/Contracts team, fostering a culture of compliance, strategic negotiation, and commercial acumen.
  • Act as the primary point of escalation for complex contract issues and disputes.
  • Drive continuous improvement in the subcontracting function by implementing best practices and utilizing procurement/contract management software.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical), Quantity Surveying, Business Administration, or a related field. An MBA, JD, or professional certification (e.g., PMP, CIPS) is a strong advantage.
  • Experience:

o Minimum of 14+ years of progressive experience in Procurement, Contracts, or Subcontract Management, with a significant focus on EPC projects.
